In December 1964 Partisan Review printed “Notes on ‘Camp’”, fifty-eight numbered notes dedicated to Oscar Wilde by a thirty-one-year-old New Yorker named Susan Sontag, and it made her famous almost overnight. She went on to write On Photography (1977), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, Illness as Metaphor (1978) and Regarding the Pain of Others (2003); in 1993 she staged Waiting for Godot by candlelight in besieged Sarajevo, and in 2000 her novel In America won the National Book Award. Readers come to her for an essay that takes a subject everyone thinks they already understand — a photograph, a disease, a style — and shows how much thinking it still needs. The writers below share that habit: they treat criticism as a serious form, write about images, politics and other people's suffering without comfort, and assume the reader can keep up.

Quick answer
If you love Susan Sontag, start with Roland Barthes, whose Camera Lucida is the other great book on photography, and John Berger's Ways of Seeing. For the political side of her thinking, read Hannah Arendt. For the essay as a precise, cold instrument, Joan Didion and Janet Malcolm. And for who carries her line now, Maggie Nelson.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Susan Sontag
Who should I read if I love Susan Sontag?
Start with Roland Barthes and John Berger, who wrote the other essential books on photography, and Walter Benjamin, the critic Sontag wrote about in Under the Sign of Saturn. For political thinking, read Hannah Arendt. For American essays with the same precision, Joan Didion, Elizabeth Hardwick and Janet Malcolm. Among living writers, Rebecca Solnit and Maggie Nelson are the closest.
What books are like On Photography?
Roland Barthes's Camera Lucida (1980) and John Berger's Ways of Seeing (1972) and About Looking (1980) are the standard companions. Walter Benjamin's essays on photography and mechanical reproduction sit behind all three. Rebecca Solnit's River of Shadows (2003), about Eadweard Muybridge, and Sontag's own Regarding the Pain of Others (2003) are the next books to read.
What should I read first by Susan Sontag?
Against Interpretation (1966), which includes “Notes on ‘Camp’”, shows her early range. On Photography (1977) is her best-known book; Illness as Metaphor (1978) is short and direct. For fiction, The Volcano Lover (1992) is the most readable of her novels.
Was Susan Sontag accused of plagiarism?
Yes. In 2000 the writer Ellen Lee identified passages in In America that closely followed four books about the actress Helena Modjeska without credit; Sontag defended the borrowing as allusion. The novel won the National Book Award that year.
Did Susan Sontag write Freud: The Mind of the Moralist?
The book was published in 1959 under the name of her then husband, Philip Rieff. Sontag researched it and is widely regarded as an uncredited co-author; Benjamin Moser's biography Sontag: Her Life and Work (2019) argues she wrote much of it.
What is the best biography of Susan Sontag?
Benjamin Moser's authorised Sontag: Her Life and Work (2019), which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2020. It covers her writing, her illnesses, her relationship with Annie Leibovitz and the dispute over the Freud book.
Is Joan Didion like Susan Sontag?
They are the two great American essayists of the same generation, and both refuse to soften what they see. But Sontag works from ideas and argument, while Didion works from a detail or a scene and lets it carry the meaning. Read On Photography and The White Album side by side to see the difference.
