Muriel Spark was born Muriel Camberg in Edinburgh in 1918 and went to James Gillespie’s School for Girls from 1923 to 1935. She married and separated in Southern Rhodesia, did intelligence work in wartime London, was received into the Catholic Church on 1 May 1954 and published her first novel, The Comforters, in 1957. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie first appeared in The New Yorker in 1961; this October Gayle Rankin is playing Miss Brodie in a new National Theatre of Scotland production at the Lyceum in Edinburgh. Spark wrote 22 novels, most of them short, and spent her last decades in Tuscany. The ten writers below share her method: small, closed worlds, comedy with a cold edge, and characters judged without being explained.

Quick answer
If you love Muriel Spark, start with Beryl Bainbridge, whose short, darkly comic novels include The Bottle Factory Outing (1974), Penelope Fitzgerald, who also wrote brief, exact novels such as the Booker-winning Offshore (1979), and Ivy Compton-Burnett, whose families tyrannise each other almost entirely in dialogue. Further down are two Catholic novelists who supported Spark’s conversion, an Italian who wrote about family with the same economy, and the Scottish writer who carries her playfulness forward.
