In Me Before You (2012), Louisa Clark loses her job at a café in a small English town and takes a six-month contract as carer to Will Traynor, a former high-flyer paralysed in an accident who has decided he does not want to go on living. The novel was filmed in 2016 with Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, from Moyes's own screenplay, and disability campaigners picketed the London premiere. Moyes, born in 1969, spent about ten years at The Independent before turning to fiction, and is one of the few authors to have won the Romantic Novel of the Year award twice. We All Live Here (2025) puts a divorced writer in a crowded house with her stepfather and her long-absent father, and Three Sisters, set on Capri, is due in February 2027. The ten writers below share her mix: a love story, ordinary jobs and families, and a serious question underneath.

Quick answer
If you like Jojo Moyes, start with David Nicholls, whose One Day (2009) follows a British couple across twenty years, and Cecelia Ahern, whose P.S. I Love You (2004) also builds a love story on a death. For the warmth and the friendships, read Maeve Binchy. Further down is a memoir that answers Me Before You from inside a paralysed body.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Jojo Moyes

David Nicholls, Cecelia Ahern and Maeve Binchy are the closest for love stories with humour and grief; Kristin Hannah is the closest to her historical novels. Liane Moriarty and Marian Keyes share her mix of comedy and hard subjects.
What should I read after Me Before You?
Moyes's own sequels, After You (2015) and Still Me (2018), continue Lou Clark's story. Cecelia Ahern's P.S. I Love You (2004) is the closest novel by someone else, and Jean-Dominique Bauby's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (1997) is the memoir to read alongside it.
Why is Me Before You controversial?
Disability campaigners, including members of the group Not Dead Yet, picketed the film's London premiere in 2016, arguing that the story romanticises a disabled man's death. Moyes said it is about one man's choice, not a statement about disabled people in general.
Does Jojo Moyes have a new book?
Yes. We All Live Here came out in February 2025, and Penguin has announced Three Sisters, about three sisters summoned to Capri by their artist father, for 11 February 2027 in the UK.
Was The Giver of Stars plagiarised?
In 2019 the novelist Kim Michele Richardson pointed to similarities with her own The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, published earlier that year, about the same Kentucky pack horse librarians. Moyes's publisher said neither she nor the publisher had known of Richardson's book, and no legal action followed.
Which Jojo Moyes book should I read first?
Me Before You (2012) is the best known. For her historical side, start with The Giver of Stars (2019) or The Girl You Left Behind (2012).
