Books Written by
Kristin Hannah was in her last year of law school when her mother, dying of breast cancer, told her not to worry about her career: she was going to be a writer anyway. The two of them started a historical romance together at the hospital bedside. Hannah put it away, went to work as a lawyer, and only came back to fiction years later, on bed rest during a pregnancy. Her first novel appeared in 1991. Twenty-five novels on, The Women was the best-selling print book in America in 2024, and since The Nightingale she has kept returning to one subject: women inside the wars and crises that history usually tells through men.

Kristin Hannah Books in Order: Her 10 Novels Since 2008
Firefly Lane
Kate Mularkey and Tully Hart become best friends as girls on Firefly Lane in Snohomish, Washington, in the 1970s, and stay close for three decades while their lives go in opposite directions: Tully into television journalism, Kate into marriage and motherhood. Netflix adapted it as a two-season series with Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke. The story continues in Fly Away.
True Colors
The three Grey sisters grow up on Water’s Edge, the family horse ranch above Hood Canal in Washington. When the youngest, Vivi Ann, marries a ranch hand who is then accused of murdering a local woman, her sister Winona, a lawyer, refuses to defend him. He is sentenced to life, and the family splits over it for a decade.
Winter Garden
After their father dies, Meredith and Nina try one last time to reach their cold, Russian-born mother, Anya. The fairy tale she used to tell them turns out to be her own story: she survived the siege of Leningrad. The first of her novels to open a door from a family drama into women’s wartime history.
Night Road
Jude Farraday has built her life around her twins, Mia and Zach. Lexi Baill, a foster girl, becomes Mia’s best friend and Zach’s girlfriend. A drunk-driving crash in their senior year kills Mia, and Lexi takes the blame and goes to prison. Years later she comes back, and Jude has to decide whether forgiveness is possible.
Home Front
Jolene Zarkades flies Black Hawks for the National Guard. Her marriage to Michael, a lawyer, is already in trouble when she is deployed to Iraq and he is left at home with their two daughters. She comes back injured and traumatised, and the family has to find out whether it can be put back together.
Fly Away
The sequel to Firefly Lane, and not one to read first. After Kate’s death, Tully falls apart, while Kate’s husband Johnny, her daughter Marah and Tully’s estranged mother each carry the loss in their own way. Much of it is told in flashback.
The Nightingale
Start hereTwo sisters in occupied France. Vianne, in the village of Carriveau, has a German officer billeted in her house and ends up hiding Jewish children, one of them in her own home. Isabelle joins the Resistance and, as “the Nightingale”, guides downed Allied airmen across the Pyrenees. Winner of the Goodreads Choice Award for Historical Fiction in 2015. A film with Dakota and Elle Fanning was shot in Budapest in 2026 and is due in cinemas on 19 March 2027. In Dutch it is De nachtegaal.
This is the one to start with. It leans hard on your emotions, sometimes past the point of subtlety, but the question it keeps asking — what would you actually risk, as a mother, for a stranger’s child — is asked honestly enough that I forgive the manipulation.
— LisanneThe Great Alone
Ernt Allbright, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, inherits land in Alaska and moves his wife Cora and thirteen-year-old daughter Leni off the grid in 1974. The first summer is a kind of paradise. Then comes the winter, and with it the violence Ernt brought home from the war. Winner of the Goodreads Choice Award for Historical Fiction in 2018; a film is in development at TriStar.
Noticeably angrier and less comforting than her war novels. This is a book about living with a man’s untreated trauma, and it does not soften it. Her own family homesteaded in Alaska in the 1980s, and you can feel it in the landscape.
— LisanneThe Four Winds
Elsa Martinelli is a farm wife in Dalhart, Texas, when drought and the Great Depression destroy the land. In 1934 she has to choose: stay and fight for a farm that is dying, or take her two children west to California, where the work is and where migrants are not wanted. It went straight to #1 on the New York Times list and stayed there for five weeks.
The Women
NewestFrankie McGrath is a twenty-year-old nursing student from Coronado Island, California. When her brother ships out to Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows him. The war is only half the book: the other half is coming home to a divided country that barely acknowledges women served there at all. The best-selling print book in America in 2024, and winner of the Goodreads Choice Award for Historical Fiction; Warner Bros. has the film rights.
Hannah at her most corrective. Female Vietnam veterans were almost entirely written out of the war’s memory, and the second half, about Frankie fighting to be believed at all, is angrier and more specific than the combat chapters. Her strongest recent book.
— LisanneA Handful of Heaven: Kristin Hannah’s First Novel
More people look for her debut than for almost any of her later books, and it is the hardest one to find.
- What it is. A historical romance, published by Fawcett in 1991. Devon O’Shea leaves St. Louis to become a partner in a trading post in the Yukon during the gold rush, and finds a filthy tent run by a recluse who was expecting a man.
- Can you still buy it? Not new. Her own website lists it as out of print, together with The Enchantment (1992). Second-hand copies turn up; there is no current edition or e-book.
- Is it like her later books? Not much. It belongs to her romance years, before the family novels and long before the war fiction. Read it as a curiosity, not as a place to start.
Kristin Hannah’s Next Book: The Fire (2027)
- When. 4 May 2027, from St. Martin’s Press in the US and Pan Macmillan in the UK.
- What. A contemporary novel, her first since the war books took over. Merritt Locke is publicly betrayed and sets off across the country to find her estranged daughter.
- Until then. The Women is her most recent novel; the paperback came out in September 2026.

Kristin Hannah’s Recurring Theme: Women Written Back Into War
It was not always war. Her first fifteen novels were romances and then family novels, most of them set in the rain and small towns of the Pacific Northwest where she grew up. Firefly Lane (2008) is the hinge: a book about two women over thirty years, which made her name, and after which the history starts to come in.
Since Winter Garden, most of her novels ask a version of the same question: what did this war, disaster or crisis look like to the women who lived through it? The Nightingale gives the French Resistance two sisters instead of one male hero. The Four Winds follows a Texas farm wife through the Dust Bowl and into the migrant camps of California. The Women follows an Army nurse through Vietnam and then home, to a country that told female veterans they had never really been there. Home Front asks it in the present tense, about a helicopter pilot deployed to Iraq.
She writes clear, fast, emotionally direct prose, built for readers who want to feel a story rather than admire its sentences. Critics sometimes call that sentimental; the readers who love her call it honest about how much history asks of the people inside it. Both readings are defensible, and neither cancels out the research: while writing The Women she talked to women who had served in Vietnam, and the book is fiction built on what they told her.
