Clarice Lispector was born Chaya Lispector in Chechelnyk, Ukraine, on 10 December 1920; her Jewish family fled the pogroms and reached Brazil when she was just over a year old. At 23 she published Near to the Wild Heart (1943), and the critic Lêdo Ivo called it the greatest novel a woman had written in Portuguese. In The Passion According to G.H. (1964) a woman alone in her Rio apartment crushes a cockroach in a wardrobe door and ends by putting part of it in her mouth; in The Hour of the Star (1977) a male narrator tries to tell the life of Macabéa, a poor typist from Alagoas. Lispector died in Rio on 9 December 1977, the day before her 57th birthday. The ten writers below share her subject: what happens inside a person in a single moment, written so that the moment becomes the whole event.

Quick answer
If you love Clarice Lispector, start with Katherine Mansfield, whose stories also turn on one moment of private revelation, and Hilda Hilst, the Brazilian writer who went furthest down the same metaphysical road. Han Kang’s The Vegetarian follows a woman whose small act of refusal changes everything. Further down is the writer who complicates her most: Carolina Maria de Jesus, whose favela diary appeared in 1960 from the same publisher as Lispector’s Family Ties.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Clarice Lispector
Who writes like Clarice Lispector?
Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf for the inner moment, Fernando Pessoa and Maggie Nelson for fragments, and Hilda Hilst and Han Kang for crises of body and faith. Carolina Maria de Jesus is the counterpoint: a diarist of the poverty that Lispector’s fiction approaches from outside.
What should I read after The Hour of the Star?
Carolina Maria de Jesus’s Child of the Dark (1960), a diary written in a São Paulo favela, and Han Kang’s The Vegetarian (2007). Within Lispector’s own work, The Passion According to G.H. (1964) goes deepest.
Is Clarice Lispector like Kafka?
In The Passion According to G.H., yes: a person alone in a room with an insect, and an identity that comes apart. Her biographer Benjamin Moser has called her the most important Jewish writer since Kafka.
Was Clarice Lispector influenced by Katherine Mansfield?
The comparison was already being made in her lifetime, but asked about Mansfield in a 1969 interview, Lispector said Mansfield’s intimist style and attention to the small facts of daily life were not her way of writing.
Which Clarice Lispector book should I read first?
The Hour of the Star (1977) is short and the usual starting point. If you prefer stories, begin with Family Ties (1960), which is included in The Complete Stories.
Does Clarice Lispector have a new book?
She died in 1977, but her work is still arriving in English: The Complete Stories in 2015 and Too Much of Life, her complete newspaper crônicas, in 2022.
