Books Written by
In February 2009 Florence Aubenas, one of the best-known reporters in France, registered at a job centre in Caen as a woman with nothing but a baccalauréat and no work history, and spent the next six months cleaning the cabins of the cross-Channel ferries at Ouistreham. Four years earlier she had been held hostage in Iraq for 157 days. Her next big book took seven years: the murder of a postmistress in a mountain village, and the actor who was suspected of it. This guide covers all six of her books in order, and where to start.

Quick answer
Florence Aubenas has published six books: two investigations, La Méprise (2005) and L'Inconnu de la poste (2021); the undercover Le Quai de Ouistreham (2010), published in English as The Night Cleaner; two collections of her reporting for Le Monde; and an early essay on journalism written with Miguel Benasayag. Only one of them has been translated into English so far, which decides where most English readers start.

La Fabrication de l'information
Written with the philosopher Miguel Benasayag: a short critique of how news is produced, and of the pressures that turn journalism into communication.
La Méprise
Aubenas followed the Outreau case, in which a group of adults in a town in northern France were accused of a child-abuse ring and held in custody for years before most of them were acquitted. The book reconstructs how investigators, judges and the press got it so badly wrong.
Le Quai de Ouistreham
For six months in 2009 Aubenas lived in Caen under her own name but as someone else, a middle-aged woman looking for work, and took the jobs on offer: above all night shifts cleaning cabins on the ferries at Ouistreham. It was a best-seller in France, was published in English as The Night Cleaner, and became the 2021 film Ouistreham, directed by Emmanuel Carrère with Juliette Binoche.
En France
A collection of short pieces from her reporting for Le Monde, mostly from small towns and ordinary lives across France: a closed factory, a market, a court hearing, a funeral.
L'Inconnu de la poste
In December 2008 Catherine Burgod, the postmistress of Montréal-la-Cluse, a village in the Ain, was stabbed to death in the post office where she worked. Suspicion fell on Gérald Thomassin, a young actor who had once won a César and was living in the village. Aubenas spent seven years reconstructing the case, “every episode except one”, as her publisher put it.
Ici et ailleurs
Her reporting for Le Monde from 2015 to 2022, from the gilets jaunes on the roundabouts of provincial France to the pandemic and daily life in Ukraine under bombardment.

In What Order to Read Florence Aubenas
Her books are not a series. If you do not read French, The Night Cleaner is the place to start. If you do, L'Inconnu de la poste is the one French critics compared to In Cold Blood.

How Florence Aubenas Works: Taking Her Time
Aubenas's method is time. For Le Quai de Ouistreham she stayed in Caen until she had found a permanent contract, which took six months; for L'Inconnu de la poste she spent seven years going back to the village and the people around the case.
She writes from the level of the people she is with and avoids judging them. In her collected reporting the subjects are rarely politicians or experts; they are cleaners, farmers, shop workers and the residents of towns most newspapers pass through.
