In February 2009 Florence Aubenas, one of the best-known reporters in France, registered at a job centre in Caen as a woman with a baccalauréat and no work history, and spent the next six months cleaning offices, campsites and the cabins of the cross-Channel ferries at Ouistreham. Le Quai de Ouistreham (2010) became The Night Cleaner in English and a film with Juliette Binoche in 2021. Four years before it she had been held hostage in Iraq for 157 days. Her most recent books are L'Inconnu de la poste (2021), seven years on the murder of a village postmistress, and Ici et ailleurs (2023), a collection of her reporting for Le Monde. The ten below were chosen on two counts: each went to live or work among people the news usually overlooks, and each keeps the attention on them rather than on themselves.

Quick answer
If you love Florence Aubenas, the closest match is Barbara Ehrenreich: Nickel and Dimed works the same cleaning jobs in the United States. For the same experiment in Germany and Britain, read Günter Wallraff and James Bloodworth; for France from the inside, Annie Ernaux; and for a French writer on a real crime, Emmanuel Carrère. Janet Malcolm questions the bargain all reporters make. Each entry below says how they got among their subjects.
