Netflix’s Zero-Dollar Hack

Netflix’s Zero-Dollar Hack

When Netflix spends an estimated $40M on a YouTuber-turned-boxer*, that’s not an anomaly.

It’s a signal of where more industries are heading.

When Netflix spends that kind of money on a creator like Jake Paul, they are basically buying a pre-packaged, highly engaged ecosystem.

And this is precisely the part that not everyone gets to realize.

Because in the old world, a brand built a product and then rented “attention” from TV networks or magazines. In the new world, the creator is the network.

When Jake Paul steps into a Netflix ring, he brings 55 million people with him. These viewers have been locked in for years by watching his daily vlogs. They’ve watched him grow up. They’ve invested ten years of their attention into his story.

This has created a level of trust that is very hard to replicate. While the boxing battle between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson drew 108 million live viewers globally in November 2024, the marketing budget for this event could effectively have been zero.

This is because Netflix didn’t have to explain who the ‘characters’ were or build a narrative from scratch. By bringing Paul in, Netflix essentially plugged into a zero-cost customer acquisition machine.

The interesting shift we are going to see in the next 5 to 10 years is how businesses are moving from ‘finding an audience’ to ‘buying an audience owner’.

The question is no longer “How do we get people to watch our ads?” but “Whose ecosystem can we join?”

It’s a fundamental shift from the mass-market shouting of the past to the hyper-engaged permission of the future.

The real work now is deciding which humans have earned enough trust to lead the way—and whether we are brave enough to follow them.

Thank you for reading! The question of today:

Which industries or businesses do you think are still stubbornly clinging to the old, rented-attention model?

Let me know in the comments!
