Books Written by Sharon Salzberg

Sharon Salzberg’s mother died when she was nine, and by sixteen she had lived with five different families. In 1969, in an Asian philosophy course at the State University of New York at Buffalo, she first came across Buddhism; in January 1971 she sat her first intensive meditation course in Bodh Gaya, India. Back in the United States she helped found the Insight Meditation Society, whose retreat centre opened in Barre, Massachusetts, in February 1976, with Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield. Her books take one practice from that tradition, metta or lovingkindness, and keep finding new places to use it: at work, in love, in politics, in loss. This guide covers her 12 key books, in order, and where to begin.

In What Order to Read Sharon Salzberg

Her books do not depend on each other, and most of them teach the same core practices from a different angle, so you can read by need rather than by date. The one real sequence is the “Real” series — Real Happiness, Real Happiness at Work, Real Love, Real Change and Real Life — which moves from basic meditation outwards to work, relationships, politics and loss.

If you are new to meditation, start with Real Happiness, which is a course. If you already meditate, Lovingkindness is the deeper book and the source of most of what came later. Faith is the one to read when you want to know who is teaching you.

The red mark is 1995: Lovingkindness, the book on the practice her whole career is built around.

How Sharon Salzberg Writes: One Practice, Many Rooms

Almost everything she has written comes back to one practice: metta, or lovingkindness, in which you silently repeat phrases such as “May I be safe” and “May you be at peace”, first for yourself and then for wider and harder circles of people. Lovingkindness sets it out in 1995; the later books take it into new settings, from the office in Real Happiness at Work to political activism in Real Change.

Her books are built like courses. Real Happiness is literally a 28-day programme in four weekly themes, and most of the others end chapters with an exercise or a guided meditation, several of them originally issued with audio. The writing is plain, in short sections, with very little Pali or Tibetan terminology left unexplained.

She teaches through stories, often her own. Faith retells her childhood and her years in India in detail, and the later books keep returning to scenes from retreats and conversations with students and, in Real Change, interviews with activists, lawyers and artists. The result is less doctrine than demonstration: a practice shown working, or failing, in a recognisable life.
