In What Order to Read Anthony Horowitz

Horowitz writes in separate series, and each one is best read in its own order. That matters most for Alex Rider, Hawthorne and Horowitz, and Susan Ryeland, where characters and relationships carry over and later books refer back to earlier cases. Moonflower Murders gives away the solution of Magpie Murders, so read those two in order.

The Sherlock Holmes and James Bond novels stand alone and can be read in any order, although the Bond books are pitched at specific points in Fleming’s chronology: Forever and a Day comes first in Bond’s life, Trigger Mortis after Goldfinger, and With a Mind to Kill after The Man with the Golden Gun. The full series orders are below.

How Anthony Horowitz Writes: The Puzzle Inside the Puzzle

His adult mysteries are built like Golden Age detective stories — a closed group of suspects, fair clues, a final explanation — with a frame around them. In the Susan Ryeland books the frame is a manuscript: Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders each contain a complete Atticus Pünd novel, and the solution to the modern crime is hidden in it. Before this he spent years adapting Agatha Christie for Poirot and writing Midsomer Murders for television.

In the Hawthorne and Horowitz books the frame is Horowitz himself. He narrates as the real author, with his real plays, television series and family, playing the role of Watson to a detective he does not much like. The Twist of a Knife goes as far as having him arrested, and A Deadly Episode sets the crime on a film of the first book in the series.

For children he writes fast, plot-driven thrillers in short chapters, with a teenage hero and real danger: Alex Rider is a reluctant spy, used by MI6 because adults overlook a boy. His Holmes and Bond novels follow the original authors closely in voice and period; the Bond books even place themselves at precise points in Fleming’s chronology.
