In 1967 Patti Smith left college in New Jersey, moved to Manhattan and found work at Scribner's bookstore, where she met a young artist called Robert Mapplethorpe. Around 1970 they lived in Room 1017 of the Hotel Chelsea, and in 1975 his photograph of her in a white shirt became the cover of her first album, Horses. She has said that “Rimbaud was like my boyfriend”. Her husband, the guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith, died in November 1994. Just Kids, her book about Mapplethorpe, won the National Book Award in 2010, and in 2016 she sang “A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall” in Stockholm on behalf of Bob Dylan at the Nobel ceremony. Her latest memoir, Bread of Angels, appeared in November 2025. The ten writers below share her ground: poetry and rock and roll, the outsider as saint, and the dead kept close.

Quick answer
If you love Patti Smith, start with Bob Dylan, whose Chronicles: Volume One (2004) is the other great memoir of arriving in New York to make songs. For the downtown poet's life, read Eileen Myles; for the poet Smith dated and encouraged to make music, read Jim Carroll's The Basketball Diaries. The list also includes Viv Albertine, whose punk memoir has none of Smith's romance.
