Erich Fromm was born in Frankfurt on 23 March 1900, the only child of an Orthodox Jewish family. In 1930 he joined the Institute for Social Research, the Frankfurt School; after the Nazis took power he left, reaching Columbia University in New York in 1934. Escape from Freedom (1941) asked why modern people hand their freedom to dictators. In 1949 he moved to Mexico City and taught at the national university; there he wrote The Art of Loving (1956), which argues that love is a skill to be learned rather than a feeling one falls into. He died in Muralto, Switzerland, in 1980, five days before his 80th birthday. In February 2026 the International Erich Fromm Society met in Regensburg to mark fifty years of To Have or To Be?. The ten writers below share his questions: what makes us unfree, what love asks of us, and how a society can make its people ill.
