Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp was born in Thorndon, Wellington, in 1888, left New Zealand on 6 July 1908 and never went back. In October 1915 her younger brother Leslie was killed in a grenade-training drill in the Ypres Salient, aged 21, and she turned to the New Zealand of their childhood: a family moving house in “Prelude”, which Leonard and Virginia Woolf hand-set and bound at the Hogarth Press in 1918, in an edition of three hundred; a party held on a perfect day in “The Garden Party”. She was diagnosed with tuberculosis in December 1917 and died near Fontainebleau on 9 January 1923, aged 34, with five books published in her lifetime. The ten writers below share her method: an ordinary day, one small event, and a mind that shifts in the space of a page.
