Irvin Yalom was born in Washington, D.C., on 13 June 1931 and joined the psychiatry faculty at Stanford in 1963. In 1980 he published Existential Psychotherapy, organised around four facts every patient has to face: death, freedom, isolation and meaninglessness. In 1989 he did something few therapists do and published ten stories about his own patients, Love's Executioner, with his doubts and mistakes left in. Then came novels: in When Nietzsche Wept (1992) the philosopher is treated in 1880s Vienna by the physician Josef Breuer. He and his wife Marilyn wrote A Matter of Death and Life (2021) during her final illness; she died in 2019. In 2024, at 93 and with his memory failing, he published Hour of the Heart with his son Benjamin, about one-off, one-hour sessions. The ten writers below share his ground: the consulting room as a place to tell the truth, and death as the fact that makes the rest matter.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Irvin Yalom
Who writes like Irvin Yalom?
Rollo May, the existential psychologist who was once his therapist, is the closest in ideas. Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning is the classic on meaning, and Stephen Grosz's The Examined Life is the closest in form to Yalom's tales of therapy. Lori Gottlieb and Esther Perel write about the therapy room for a wide audience.
What should I read after Love's Executioner?
Stephen Grosz's The Examined Life (2013), short true stories from a psychoanalyst's practice, and Lori Gottlieb's Maybe You Should Talk to Someone (2019), which adds the therapist's own sessions. Yalom's own Momma and the Meaning of Life (1999) continues in the same form.
Which Irvin Yalom book should I read first?
Love's Executioner (1989), ten true stories from his practice, is the usual starting point. For fiction, start with When Nietzsche Wept (1992); for his ideas in full, Existential Psychotherapy (1980).
Does Irvin Yalom have a new book?
His most recent book is Hour of the Heart (2024), written with his son Benjamin, about the single one-hour sessions he began holding in his nineties. A German translation appeared in November 2025.
Was Rollo May Irvin Yalom's therapist?
Yes. Yalom was in therapy with Rollo May for a time and has spoken highly of him. May's Existence (1958) and Love and Will (1969) belong to the same existential tradition as Yalom's work.
Is Irvin Yalom like Viktor Frankl?
They share a tradition. Frankl put the search for meaning at the centre of therapy; Yalom treats meaninglessness as one of four givens, with death, freedom and isolation. Frankl wrote out of the Nazi camps, Yalom out of decades of ordinary practice in California.
