Books Written by Ron Rash

Ron Rash’s first novel opens in a South Carolina valley in the 1950s, as a sheriff looks for a missing Korean War veteran and the power company prepares to flood the land for a reservoir. Born in 1953 and raised in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, Rash published poetry and stories for years before that novel, One Foot in Eden (2002). Almost everything since is set in the mountains of the Carolinas, and most of it in a real moment of their history: the Civil War massacre at Shelton Laurel, a German internment camp in 1918, the timber boom of 1929. Serena (2008) became a film with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, and Burning Bright won the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award in 2010. He teaches Appalachian cultural studies at Western Carolina University. This guide covers his 11 key books, in order, and where to begin.

How Ron Rash Writes: Real History, One Valley at a Time

Rash starts from a documented moment and a specific place. One Foot in Eden is built on a valley cleared for a reservoir, The World Made Straight on the Shelton Laurel massacre of 1863, The Cove on German prisoners held in North Carolina in 1918, Serena on the timber companies of 1929. The history is never a backdrop: it decides what his characters can and cannot do.

He published poetry and stories for years before his first novel, and it shows in the compression of his sentences and in his liking for several voices. One Foot in Eden has five narrators; Above the Waterfall alternates between a sheriff’s plain report and a ranger’s lyrical one; Serena uses a chorus of loggers. He has said Macbeth shaped Serena Pemberton and the structure of her story.

His subject is the region, but he does not write it as quaint. Poverty, drugs, violence and land taken for profit run through the books from the 1860s to the meth era of Burning Bright. As he put it in a 2015 interview, a writer can be “intensely Southern” and universal at once.
