Books Written by Harriet Lerner

In 1985 a staff psychologist at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, published The Dance of Anger, described as the first book published in the United States on the subject of women’s anger. Harriet Lerner, born in Brooklyn in 1944, had worked at the clinic since 1972 and would stay until 2001. The book became a New York Times bestseller and has been translated into more than 35 languages; her books together have sold more than six million copies. She went on to write a series of “dance” books on intimacy, deception, connection and fear, then books on marriage and apology. This guide covers her 10 key books, in order, and where to begin.

In What Order to Read Harriet Lerner

The books stand alone, but The Dance of Anger sets out the ideas the rest rely on: anger as information, changing your own steps in a repeating pattern, and expecting resistance when you do. Reading it first makes the later “dance” books easier to follow.

After that, pick by problem: The Dance of Intimacy for family relationships, The Dance of Connection for a difficult conversation, The Dance of Fear for anxiety, Marriage Rules for couples, and Why Won’t You Apologize? for repair after a hurt. Women in Therapy is written for professionals and is best left for last.

How Harriet Lerner Writes: Changing Your Own Steps

Lerner trained as a psychoanalytic psychologist and spent nearly three decades at the Menninger Clinic. Her work revises psychoanalytic ideas about women from a feminist and family-systems perspective: problems are seen as patterns between people, in which each person’s moves provoke the other’s, rather than as flaws inside one person.

That is where the “dance” in her titles comes from. Her advice is almost always about changing your own steps rather than the other person’s, stating a clear position calmly, and expecting others to push back when you do. She explains this through cases from her practice and her own family, in plain language without jargon.

The later books get shorter and more practical: Life Preservers answers readers’ letters, Marriage Rules is a list of just over 100 rules, and Why Won’t You Apologize? breaks apology down into what works and what does not. The ideas stay the same as in 1985.
