Stella Sweeney, a Dublin beautician, is paralysed by Guillain-Barré syndrome and can communicate only by blinking. Her neurologist writes down what she blinks, and the book he turns it into makes her briefly famous in New York.
The Break
When her husband announces he needs a six-month break from their marriage to travel and ‘find himself’, Amy has to work out what she wants from her own life while he is gone.

How Marian Keyes Writes: Jokes About the Things Nobody Jokes About
The narrators talk to you. Most of the novels are told in a first person that digresses, exaggerates, lists and confides, and that voice is where the comedy comes from. It is also why the serious material lands: in Rachel's Holiday the jokes are what Rachel uses to avoid looking at her addiction, so they stop being funny before she notices it herself.
The subjects are heavier than the covers suggest: addiction, depression, domestic abuse, grief, illness. She has written openly about her own alcoholism and her own depression, and the novels that draw on them most directly are among the ones readers return to.
The Walshes give the books a long spine. Five sisters and their parents turn up across nearly thirty years, ageing in real time, so each new Walsh novel is partly a reunion with people you last saw ten years earlier.
