Ocean Vuong was born on a rice farm outside Saigon in 1988 and arrived in Hartford, Connecticut, at two, in a family where nobody could read. He learned to read himself at eleven. By 2016 he had written a poetry collection that won the T.S. Eliot Prize; by 2019 a novel that became a bestseller and a MacArthur Fellowship. His books alternate between poetry and fiction, and there are only six of them. This guide covers all six in order, including the two early chapbooks, and where to start.

All 6 Ocean Vuong Books, in Order
Burnings
His first book, a short chapbook written in his early twenties, with poems about his family's flight from Vietnam and his childhood in Hartford. The American Library Association named it on its Over the Rainbow list of notable LGBTQ books. Long out of print and hard to find.
No
His second chapbook, and the book people mean when they search for “no Ocean Vuong”. A small, spare sequence that sits between Burnings and his first full collection, and shows the voice already tightening.
Night Sky with Exit Wounds
His first full-length collection and his breakthrough. Poems about his father, his mother, the Vietnam War, desire and inheritance, including “Someday I'll Love Ocean Vuong” and “Aubade with Burning City”. It won the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Whiting Award, and made him, at 28, one of the most talked-about poets writing in English.
Start here even if you think you don't read poetry. It is the book everything else grows out of.
— LisanneOn Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous
His first novel, written as a letter from a son, called Little Dog, to a mother who cannot read it. It moves between a grandmother's memories of wartime Vietnam, a nail salon in Hartford, and a first love on a tobacco farm. A New York Times bestseller, and the year it appeared Vuong received a MacArthur Fellowship.
Read it slowly. It is a novel written by a poet, and the sentences are the point.
— LisanneTime Is a Mother
His second collection, written after his mother died in November 2019 and through the pandemic. Grief handled without ceremony, including a poem that is simply a receipt. It was shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize.
Read it next to On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous: the same mother, after her death.
— LisanneThe Emperor of Gladness
His second novel, published on May 13, 2025. In the post-industrial town of East Gladness, Connecticut, nineteen-year-old Hai, at the lowest point of his life, is talked out of it by Grazina, an elderly widow living with dementia, and becomes her carer. A story about chosen family and low-paid work, it was an instant New York Times bestseller and an Oprah's Book Club pick.
It opens with a suicide attempt and deals with addiction and dementia throughout. Worth knowing before you begin.

How Ocean Vuong Writes: A Novelist Who Never Stopped Being a Poet
Vuong came to English late and to reading later, and he has said that this is exactly why he treats each sentence as something that has to earn its place. Nobody in his family could read; he taught himself at eleven. What he built from that is a prose style with almost no filler, where a paragraph can stop mid-thought and a novel can be addressed to a reader who will never read it.
The material barely changes across the six books: his grandmother's Vietnam, his mother's nail salon in Hartford, a father who is mostly absent, first love, and the particular exhaustion of low-paid work. What changes is the form. A story that is a poem in Night Sky with Exit Wounds becomes a chapter in On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, and the grief that is a novel's ending becomes a collection of its own in Time Is a Mother.
Not everyone is convinced. Reviewers who love him call the prose luminous; reviewers who do not call it overwritten, and The Emperor of Gladness drew both verdicts loudly. Read a page before you buy: you will know within a paragraph which camp you are in.

Where is Ocean Vuong from?
He is Vietnamese American. He was born on a rice farm outside Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, in 1988. After more than a year in a refugee camp in the Philippines, his family moved to the United States when he was two, and he grew up in Hartford, Connecticut.
Where does Ocean Vuong live?
He splits his time between Northampton, Massachusetts, and New York City, where he teaches at NYU.
How do you pronounce Ocean Vuong?
“Ocean” is said like the English word. “Vuong” is a single syllable, roughly “vwong”, which is the pronunciation his publisher gives.
Is Ocean Vuong his real name?
It is the name his mother gave him after the family reached the United States. He was born Vương Quốc Vinh. His mother, who worked in a nail salon, renamed him Ocean after a customer explained that an ocean is the body of water that connects countries, including Vietnam and the United States.
What does Ocean Vuong write about?
Family, above all his mother and grandmother; the Vietnam War and what it left behind; queer desire; working-class life and low-paid work; language and literacy; and grief. The same material comes back across his poetry and his novels, each time in a different form.

It is a novel in the form of a letter from a young man, called Little Dog, to his mother, who cannot read. It moves between his grandmother's memories of the Vietnam War, his mother's work in a nail salon in Hartford, and his first relationship, and it is about language, class and what a family can and cannot say to each other. The New Yorker published an early version in 2017 as the essay “A Letter to My Mother That She Will Never Read”.
Is On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous autobiographical?
It draws heavily on Vuong's own life, including his family's arrival from Vietnam and his mother's work in a nail salon, but it is published as a novel rather than a memoir, and its narrator is a character rather than the author.
What is the poem A Little Closer to the Edge about?
It is a short poem from Night Sky with Exit Wounds (2016) that imagines the speaker's parents when they were young, stepping hand in hand into a bomb crater during the war. Love and violence share the same ground, and the father's desire is cast as a foreshadowing of the son who will come from it, a theme that runs through the whole collection.
