Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947, and at seventeen his parents had him committed to a psychiatric institution, from which he escaped three times before he was released at twenty. In 1986 he walked the road to Santiago de Compostela, wrote The Pilgrimage about it, and in 1988 published The Alchemist, the story of a shepherd boy who dreams of treasure at the Pyramids. Its first Brazilian print run was 900 copies, and the publisher decided not to reprint it. He moved it to a larger house, it began to sell, and the English translation followed in 1993; it has since sold more than 150 million copies. Readers come to Coelho for a short, plain story that carries a large question — what your life is for, and whether you have the nerve to go after it. The plot itself is very old: a version of it is in the Thousand and One Nights, and the earliest known one is a poem by Rumi. The writers below share either that form — the parable, the quest, the teaching tale — or the question, asked with more difficulty than Coelho asks it.

Quick answer
If you love Paulo Coelho, start with Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha, the quest novel The Alchemist most resembles. For the short fable, read Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Richard Bach. For the aphorisms, Kahlil Gibran. And for the oldest version of the same story, go back to Rumi and to Jorge Luis Borges, who retold it in three pages.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Paulo Coelho
Who should I read if I love Paulo Coelho?
Hermann Hesse first: Siddhartha is the quest novel most like The Alchemist. For the short fable, read Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince and Richard Bach's Jonathan Livingston Seagull. For the aphorisms, Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. For the Sufi tradition Coelho has said shaped The Alchemist, read Rumi and Idries Shah's Tales of the Dervishes.
What books are like The Alchemist?
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach and The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran are the closest in form and feeling. Life of Pi by Yann Martel is a longer, more doubtful journey-fable. For a fuller list of single books, see our guide to books like The Alchemist.
Is The Alchemist based on an older story?
Yes. A man dreams of treasure in a far city, travels there, and learns it was buried at home: a version of this tale is in the Thousand and One Nights, and the earliest known version is a poem by the thirteenth-century Persian poet Rumi. Jorge Luis Borges retold the Nights version as “The Story of the Two Dreamers” in A Universal History of Infamy (1935).
What should I read after The Alchemist if I want more depth?
Jorge Luis Borges takes the same fascination with fate, dreams and hidden meaning into much denser, stranger fiction; start with Ficciones. Clarice Lispector, also Brazilian, asks the same questions about what a life is for from inside a single consciousness. Hesse's Steppenwolf is the darker side of the seeker.
Are there women writers like Paulo Coelho?
Isabel Allende is the closest in warmth and in her sense of fate and the uncanny; start with The House of the Spirits. Clarice Lispector is the more demanding choice: dense, inward novels that treat ordinary perception as a spiritual crisis.
Are there Brazilian writers like Paulo Coelho?
Clarice Lispector is the great Brazilian writer of the inner life, though her method is the opposite of his. Moacyr Scliar's novella Max and the Cats (1981), about a boy in a boat with a jaguar, is the Brazilian book Yann Martel credited for the spark of Life of Pi.
