Q&A: What’s Been My Favorite Motorcycle Road Trip So Far?

Every month, I publish an answer to a reader’s question. Here’s a transcript of my answer to the reader’s question about a wonderful motorcycle road trip I made in 2016.

Hey Lisanne. You’ve shared about the freedom of riding a motorbike before, but what’s been your favorite motorcycle road trip so far — and why?

In 2016, I took a month off and went to Vietnam. We traveled all the way from the south — Ho Chi Minh City — to the north, ending in Hanoi. In a small village called Đà Lạt, we bought a Yamaha motorbike for only $260 at the time, and for the rest of the month, I got to experience Vietnam from the back of that bike. Motorbike culture is a huge part of daily life in Vietnam, and the locals make it look effortless — even on rough, unpaved roads.

It turned out to be one of the best ways to explore the country up close, as it allowed us to get off the main highways and onto back roads that took us to places we otherwise would never have reached. We got invited into people’s homes, were offered rice wine in little cups, and talked to their families–even though we couldn’t understand even a single word. It’s surprising how we had such a great time together without speaking the same language.

Vietnam also has some incredible roads for motorcycling, like the scenic Hai Van Pass, the remote Ho Chi Minh Road, the incredible Quy Nhon Pass, and the winding mountain routes of the Ha Giang Loop. They’re all worth trying!

During that trip, I fell in love with riding—it is one of those rare, sacred moments that helps clear your mind completely. It just feels really good to switch off your thoughts for a while, let go, and be free. Embracing uncertainty and daring to venture where others won’t can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
