Books Written by Paul Newman

In 1986 Paul Newman and Stewart Stern began an oral history of his life. For five years they interviewed Newman and the people around him, from family and friends to colleagues. The thousands of pages of transcripts became The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man, published in 2022, fourteen years after his death. His other books tell the story of Newman’s Own, the food company that gives its profits to charity. This guide covers his 2 key books, in order, and where to begin.

In What Order to Read Paul Newman

Start with the memoir. It is the only book in which Newman talks about himself at length, and it is a candid one, covering his struggles with alcohol as well as his career.

Shameless Exploitation is lighter and shorter, and shows the other side of his later life: the business and the charities it funds.

How Paul Newman’s Books Were Made

Newman never sat down to write a conventional memoir. The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man comes from an oral history: from 1986 Newman and Stewart Stern interviewed him and the people around him for five years. Newman later abandoned the memoir; after his death the transcripts were edited into a first-person book, with the other voices placed between his own, and a foreword by his daughter Melissa Newman.

The title sets the tone: Newman presents himself as an ordinary man, and the book does not avoid the hard parts of his life, including his struggles with alcohol.

His earlier books are collaborations with A. E. Hotchner, his partner in Newman’s Own, and are told by the two friends together.
