By 2016 he had written a poetry collection that won the T.S. Eliot Prize; by 2019 a novel that became a bestseller and a MacArthur Fellowship. Night Sky with Exit Wounds
His first full-length collection and his breakthrough. Poems about his father, his mother, the Vietnam War, desire and inheritance, including “Someday I'll Love Ocean Vuong” and “Aubade with Burning City”. It won the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Whiting Award, and made him, at 28, one of the most talked-about poets writing in English.

His first novel, written as a letter from a son, called Little Dog, to a mother who cannot read it. It moves between a grandmother's memories of wartime Vietnam, a nail salon in Hartford, and a first love on a tobacco farm. A New York Times bestseller, and the year it appeared Vuong received a MacArthur Fellowship.

In the post-industrial town of East Gladness, Connecticut, nineteen-year-old Hai, at the lowest point of his life, is talked out of it by Grazina, an elderly widow living with dementia, and becomes her carer. A story about chosen family and low-paid work, it was an instant New York Times bestseller and an Oprah's Book Club pick.

How Ocean Vuong Writes: A Novelist Who Never Stopped Being a Poet
Vuong came to English late and to reading later, and he has said that this is exactly why he treats each sentence as something that has to earn its place. Nobody in his family could read; he taught himself at eleven. What he built from that is a prose style with almost no filler, where a paragraph can stop mid-thought and a novel can be addressed to a reader who will never read it.
The material barely changes across the six books: his grandmother's Vietnam, his mother's nail salon in Hartford, a father who is mostly absent, first love, and the particular exhaustion of low-paid work. What changes is the form. A story that is a poem in Night Sky with Exit Wounds becomes a chapter in On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, and the grief that is a novel's ending becomes a collection of its own in Time Is a Mother.
Not everyone is convinced. Reviewers who love him call the prose luminous; reviewers who do not call it overwritten, and The Emperor of Gladness drew both verdicts loudly. Read a page before you buy: you will know within a paragraph which camp you are in.
