Yann Martel was born in Salamanca in 1963 to French-Canadian parents who later joined Canada’s foreign service, and he grew up in Costa Rica, France, Alaska and Ottawa before studying philosophy at Trent University. At least five London publishers turned down Life of Pi before Knopf Canada took it. In it a boy from Pondicherry who practises Hinduism, Christianity and Islam spends 227 days in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker, then tells two Japanese investigators a second, darker version. It won the Booker Prize in 2002 and has sold more than twelve million copies. Beatrice and Virgil (2010) made a donkey and a monkey the heroes of a play about the Holocaust, and Son of Nobody (2026) hides a father’s story in the footnotes of a lost Trojan epic. The ten writers below share his question: which version of a story do we choose to believe?

Quick answer
The closest matches are Moacyr Scliar, whose novella Max and the Cats (1981) puts a young German refugee in a dinghy with a jaguar; Ruth Ozeki, whose A Tale for the Time Being (2013) mixes Zen Buddhism, a found diary and a novelist called Ruth; and Vladimir Nabokov, whose Pale Fire (1962) tells its real story in an editor’s commentary, as Son of Nobody does in footnotes. Seven more follow, from the castaway of 1719 to a Nobel laureate who argues with Martel about animals.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Yann Martel
Who writes like Yann Martel?
Moacyr Scliar for the castaway and the big cat, Ruth Ozeki for faith and stories within stories, and Vladimir Nabokov and Jorge Luis Borges for invented texts. J. M. Coetzee and Julian Barnes argue with him on animals and belief.
What should I read after Life of Pi?
Moacyr Scliar’s Max and the Cats (1981), Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being (2013), or Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719), the castaway novel that first claimed to be a true account.
Is Life of Pi based on another book?
Martel has said a review of Moacyr Scliar’s novella Max and the Cats, about a man sharing a lifeboat with a jaguar, sparked his premise, and he thanked Scliar in the author’s note. He said he had not read the novella itself; the Brazilian press criticised him in 2002 for not consulting Scliar.
Does Yann Martel have a new book?
Yes. Son of Nobody was published in March 2026 by Knopf Canada, and by W. W. Norton in the United States. A classicist at Oxford reconstructs a lost epic of the Trojan War, The Psoad, and tells his own story to his daughter in the footnotes.
Which Yann Martel book should I read first?
Life of Pi (2001), his Booker Prize winner. Then Son of Nobody (2026) if you like stories within stories, or The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios (1993) for his short fiction.
Is Son of Nobody like Pale Fire?
Both set an old or invented poem against the notes of the man presenting it, whose own life leaks into the commentary. Nabokov’s editor is deluded; Martel’s classicist is writing to his daughter.
