Rick Rubin started Def Jam in 1984 in room 712 of Weinstein Hall, his NYU dorm, and its first release was T La Rock and Jazzy Jay's “It's Yours”. Ten years later he was recording Johnny Cash alone with a guitar for American Recordings, and he has since been named the Grammys' producer of the year twice. On 60 Minutes in January 2023 he told Anderson Cooper that he has “no technical ability” and knows “nothing about music”; what artists pay for, he said, is his confidence in his taste. That month Penguin Press published The Creative Act: A Way of Being, a book of short chapters that reads less like a producer's memoir than a manual of attention: the artist as someone who notices, waits and gets out of the way. In 2025 he followed it with The Way of Code, an online adaptation of the eighty-one chapters of the Tao Te Ching made with Anthropic. Readers come to Rubin for permission and for a practice. The writers below share his conviction that creative work is less about talent than about the conditions you make for it — a daily ritual, a quiet mind, a constraint, a team that tells the truth.

Quick answer
If you love Rick Rubin, start with Julia Cameron, whose The Artist's Way turns his philosophy into a daily routine. Go back to Lao Tzu, the source of his second book. Read David Lynch on meditation and ideas, Brian Eno for the other great producer who thinks on paper, and Steven Pressfield if what stops you is not ideas but sitting down.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Rick Rubin
Who should I read if I love Rick Rubin?
Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way is the most practical next step, and Elizabeth Gilbert's Big Magic shares his sense that ideas arrive from outside. For the roots of his thinking, read Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching and Shunryu Suzuki's Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. David Lynch's Catching the Big Fish and Brian Eno's A Year with Swollen Appendices come from artists who, like Rubin, think about how ideas arrive.
What books are like The Creative Act?
David Lynch's Catching the Big Fish (2006) is closest in form: short chapters on meditation and ideas. Elizabeth Gilbert's Big Magic (2015) is closest in its view of inspiration. Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way (1992) and Twyla Tharp's The Creative Habit (2003) turn the same philosophy into a routine.
Is The Creative Act based on the Tao Te Ching?
Not directly, but its ideas of receptivity and non-forcing are close to Taoism, and Rubin's next project, The Way of Code (2025), is an adaptation of the Tao Te Ching's eighty-one chapters, made with Anthropic and published online. Reading a translation of Lao Tzu is the best way to see where his voice comes from.
Are there other music producers who write about creativity?
Brian Eno is the obvious one. With the artist Peter Schmidt he made Oblique Strategies (1975), a deck of cards for breaking creative blocks, and his diary A Year with Swollen Appendices (1996) sets out his working philosophy. Like Rubin, he sees the producer's job as creating conditions rather than imposing a sound.
Does Rick Rubin play an instrument or know music theory?
By his own account, not in any technical sense. In a 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper in January 2023 he said he has “no technical ability” and knows “nothing about music”, and that artists value his confidence in his taste. That idea — that attention and judgement matter more than technique — runs through The Creative Act.
What is the difference between Rick Rubin and Steven Pressfield?
Both write about the self-doubt and avoidance that stop creative work. Rubin's tone is contemplative: notice the resistance and let it pass. Pressfield's The War of Art (2002) names it Resistance, treats it as an enemy and answers it with daily professional discipline.
