Books Written by Julia Cameron

Three pages, by hand, every morning, about whatever comes into your head. That is the first tool in The Artist’s Way, the twelve-week course Julia Cameron first sold as photocopies in a bookshop before Jeremy P. Tarcher published it in 1992. It has since sold more than five million copies in forty languages. Cameron, born in 1948 outside Chicago, came to it the long way: reporter for The Washington Post and Rolling Stone, a one-year marriage to Martin Scorsese, Hollywood screenwriting, and in 1978 a decision to stop drinking that sent her back to the page. Most of her later books extend the same course. This guide covers her 13 key books, in order, and where to begin.

The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity

Julia Cameron · 1992

A twelve-week course for people who feel blocked in their creative work, built on two tools: morning pages, three longhand pages written first thing each day, and the artist date, a weekly solo outing. It began as photocopies of her course notes, self-published as Healing the Artist Within, before Jeremy P. Tarcher published it in 1992; the first edition credited it “with Mark Bryan”, her collaborator and then husband. It has sold more than five million copies and been translated into forty languages.

The Vein of Gold: A Journey to Your Creative Heart

Julia Cameron · 1996

Julia Cameron · 1998

Short essays on writing as something anyone can do, not a talent reserved for professionals, each followed by an exercise. Cameron draws on her own years as a journalist, screenwriter and novelist, and argues against waiting for the right mood, time or conditions before starting.

The Sound of Paper: Starting from Scratch

Julia Cameron · 2004

Short essays, each paired with exercises, on starting again when work has stalled. The book is looser in structure than the twelve-week courses and closer to a daily companion, with Cameron writing about her own setbacks as she goes.

Floor Sample: A Creative Memoir

Julia Cameron · 2006

Her memoir, from a Catholic childhood and early success as a magazine writer to her brief marriage to Martin Scorsese, the father of her only child, and the drinking and cocaine use that followed in Hollywood. It describes getting sober, the start of her teaching and a later breakdown and hospital stay. Kirkus called it “an absorbing narrative”; Publishers Weekly was critical of her self-portrait.

In What Order to Read Julia Cameron

Only three of her books are meant to be read in sequence: The Artist’s Way, Walking in This World and Finding Water, each a twelve-week course that assumes you have done the one before. Everything else can be read on its own, though almost every book expects you to know morning pages and artist dates, so The Artist’s Way comes first in any order.

After that, read by need: The Right to Write or Write for Life for writing, The Prosperous Heart for money, It’s Never Too Late to Begin Again for retirement. Floor Sample is the background to all of it and can be read at any point.

How Julia Cameron Writes: The Course as the Book

Most of Cameron’s books are courses rather than arguments. The Artist’s Way, Walking in This World, Finding Water and It’s Never Too Late to Begin Again each run twelve weeks; the later books run six or ten. Each week mixes a short essay with tasks and a check-in, and the reader is expected to do the work, not only read it.

The method comes from her own recovery. She stopped drinking in 1978, kept a daily quota of three pages, and began teaching what she called creative unblocking; the book grew out of those classes. Her publisher’s bio quotes her calling herself “the floor sample of her own toolkit”, the phrase that became the title of her memoir. She writes in the first person, with stories from her own blocks and from students, and she treats creativity as spiritual, with open references to God and prayer.

Her tools change slowly from book to book: walks gain weight in The Vein of Gold and become a fixed tool, listening with The Listening Path, guidance as a fourth tool with Living the Artist’s Way. For writers on similar ground, see Authors like Elizabeth Gilbert.

Frequently asked questions about Julia Cameron’s books

How many books has Julia Cameron written?

More than forty, according to her publisher, across nonfiction, fiction, poetry and prayer books. This page lists 13 key books, from The Artist’s Way (1992) to Living the Artist’s Way (2024), and 18 more in the other-books section.

What are Julia Cameron’s books in order?

The key books are The Artist’s Way (1992), The Vein of Gold (1996), The Right to Write (1998), Walking in This World (2002), The Sound of Paper (2004), Floor Sample (2006), Finding Water (2007), The Prosperous Heart (2011), It’s Never Too Late to Begin Again (2016), The Listening Path (2021), Seeking Wisdom (2022), Write for Life (2023) and Living the Artist’s Way (2024).

Where should I start with Julia Cameron?

With The Artist’s Way. It introduces morning pages and the artist date, and nearly every later book assumes you know them. If you only want help with writing, The Right to Write works on its own.

What is Julia Cameron’s most famous book?

The Artist’s Way (1992), a twelve-week course in creative recovery that has sold more than five million copies and been translated into forty languages.

What are morning pages?

Three pages of longhand writing done first thing in the morning, about anything at all, not meant to be reread or shown to anyone. They are the first tool in The Artist’s Way, and Cameron has said she still writes them herself.

What is an artist date?

A weekly outing taken alone to do something that interests or delights you, such as a museum, a walk somewhere new or a shop you have never been into. It is the second basic tool of The Artist’s Way, alongside morning pages.

Is The Artist’s Way part of a series?

Yes. The Artist’s Way, Walking in This World (2002) and Finding Water (2007) form a trilogy of twelve-week courses meant to be done in order. Many of her other books use the same tools but stand alone.

Is The Artist’s Way religious?

It is openly spiritual. Cameron treats creativity as a spiritual path and writes about God, though she tells sceptical readers they can read “God” as whatever creative force they choose. Some reviewers have called her work “unabashedly theistic”, and readers who want a purely practical method sometimes find this off-putting.

Was Julia Cameron married to Martin Scorsese?

Yes, from 1976 to 1977. Their daughter, the actress and filmmaker Domenica Cameron-Scorsese, was born in 1976. Cameron writes about the marriage in her memoir Floor Sample (2006).

Is Julia Cameron still alive?

Yes. She was born on 4 March 1948 in Libertyville, Illinois, lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and published Living the Artist’s Way in 2024.
