In The Unwinding (2013), George Packer follows Tammy Thomas, a factory worker in Youngstown, Ohio, who becomes a community organiser; Dean Price, a North Carolina entrepreneur betting on biodiesel; Jeff Connaughton, a Washington lobbyist; and Peter Thiel in Silicon Valley, across the years 1978 to 2012. Between their stories he sets short portraits of the famous, from Jay-Z to Alice Waters, and collages of headlines and song lyrics, a form he took from John Dos Passos’s U.S.A. trilogy. The book won the National Book Award. Packer, born in California in 1960, had served in the Peace Corps in Togo and reported the Iraq war for The New Yorker; in November 2025 he published a novel, The Emergency. The ten writers below share his method: ordinary lives, reported closely, used to tell the story of a country.
