In 1837 Charlotte Brontë sent some of her poems to the Poet Laureate, Robert Southey, who replied that “Literature cannot be the business of a woman's life, and it ought not to be.” Nine years later she and her sisters published Poems under the names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell; it sold two copies. Jane Eyre followed in October 1847: an orphan governess falls in love with her employer and discovers what he keeps in the attic. Between September 1848 and May 1849 her brother Branwell and her sisters Emily and Anne all died, and she wrote Shirley (1849) and Villette (1853) alone. She married her father's curate in June 1854 and died the following March, aged 38. The ten writers below share her ground: a plain, clever woman who will not keep quiet, a house that hides something, and love that has to be met on equal terms.

For a second wife haunted by a first, read Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca; for Brontë herself, read Elizabeth Gaskell, her friend and first biographer. The list also includes the writers she argued with, from Jane Austen to her own sister Anne.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Charlotte Brontë
Who writes like Charlotte Brontë?
Daphne du Maurier and Sarah Waters for Gothic houses and secrets, Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot for Victorian heroines who want more, and Jean Rhys for the novel that answers Jane Eyre directly.

Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), the story of the first Mrs Rochester, and Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca (1938), with its young wife, older husband, great house and fire.

Less than people assume. Both write women without fortunes who refuse the sensible marriage, but Austen works through irony and dialogue, and in 1848 Brontë called Pride and Prejudice “a carefully fenced, highly cultivated garden”.

Jane Eyre (1847). If you already know it, read Villette (1853), her last completed novel, drawn from her own years at a school in Brussels.
Is there a new Jane Eyre adaptation?
Yes. In February 2026 it was reported that Aimee Lou Wood will star in a new television series of Jane Eyre written by Miriam Battye; it was in development and still looking for a UK broadcaster.
Did the Brontë sisters use pseudonyms?
Yes. Charlotte, Emily and Anne published as Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, keeping their initials, and their 1846 Poems sold two copies.
