Books Written by
In 1975, at fifteen, Rupert Spira came across the poetry of Rumi and, the same year, a retrospective of the potter Michael Cardew at Camberwell Arts Centre in London. Five years later he was living and working with Cardew at Wenford Bridge in Cornwall. For about thirty years he was a studio potter, with work in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum, while studying Advaita Vedanta at Colet House in London. In the 1990s he met the French teacher Francis Lucille, and in 2008 he published his first book on non-duality, the idea that experience is one seamless whole known by a single awareness. In 2013 he closed his studio to teach and write full time. This guide covers his 13 key books, in order, and where to begin.

13 Rupert Spira Books, in Order
The Transparency of Things
His first book, a collection of contemplative essays and conversations first published by Non-Duality Press. It sets out to look at experience without changing it, and argues that our essential nature is neither the body nor the mind but the conscious presence that is aware of them. Later chapters look at how body, mind and world appear in that presence, and end with experience as one seamless whole without separate objects. Sahaja Publications reissued it in 2016.
Presence, Volume I
Essays on the nature of the self and the happiness people look for. Spira argues that the self is not the body or the mind but the aware presence that knows them, and that peace and happiness belong to that presence rather than to anything it experiences. First published by Non-Duality Press in 2011, with a Sahaja edition in 2016.
Presence, Volume II
The companion to Volume I, published the same year. It grew out of a three-month study group in which Spira answered questions about non-duality, so it is looser and less structured than the first volume. Its subject is experience itself: seamless and intimate, with no division between a knowing self and a known object, an intimacy the book calls love.
The Ashes of Love
A book of short sayings, first published by Non-Duality Press in 2013, the year Spira closed his pottery studio. His own publications page files it with his poetry and quotations rather than his essays. Sahaja Publications issued a new edition in 2024.
The Light of Pure Knowing
Thirty guided meditations chosen from the hundreds Spira gave at meetings and retreats between 2011 and 2013. They are meant as contemplative exercises rather than philosophy, and need no spiritual or philosophical background. His first book with his own imprint, Sahaja Publications; a new edition in 2024 came with an audiobook of about 18 hours, read by Spira.
Transparent Body, Luminous World
Twenty-four yoga meditations selected from several hundred Spira led in Europe and the United States from 2012 onwards. They treat the body and the world as a changing flow of sensations and perceptions that appear in, are known by and are made of awareness, with the aim that the body comes to feel as impersonal as the world, and the world as intimate as the body. It first appeared as a book with six MP3 CDs, around 30 hours of audio; a stand-alone paperback followed in 2024.
The Nature of Consciousness
Eighteen essays arguing that consciousness, rather than matter, is the basic reality behind the apparent split between mind and matter, and that overlooking it drives personal unhappiness and wider conflict. Chapters take on the “hard problem” of consciousness, panpsychism and Wordsworth. It has a foreword by Deepak Chopra and an afterword by the philosopher Bernardo Kastrup, and was co-published with New Harbinger. His literary agency reports 30,000 copies sold and translations into languages including French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish.
Being Aware of Being Aware
The earliest book in The Essence of Meditation series, published in November 2017. It collects meditations Spira led on awareness knowing itself, which he says is usually overlooked. Its starting point, in the publisher’s words: “The returning of awareness to itself – being aware of being aware – is the essence of meditation and prayer.”
A Meditation on I Am
A single book-length contemplative poem on the nature of the self before it is shaped by experience: the awareness that shines as the knowing “I am”. Spira calls it “a poem, a prayer and a hymn of praise to the simple fact of being”. Published by New Harbinger in April 2021, with an audiobook of 37 minutes read by Spira.
Being Myself
A book in The Essence of Meditation series, compiled from contemplations Spira led at his meetings and retreats. It uses investigation and analogy to lead the reader back to the essential nature of the self.
You Are the Happiness You Seek
Spira’s introduction to non-duality, published by Sahaja in April 2022 and written for newcomers as well as experienced readers. It argues that looking for lasting happiness in objects, situations and relationships is bound to disappoint, because happiness is the nature of our own being, which we share with everyone and everything. Its nineteen chapters run from “The Search for Happiness” through self-enquiry, meditation and painful emotions to “The All-Pervasive Spirit”.
The Heart of Prayer
Guided meditations from meetings and retreats held between 2020 and 2022, on the “union with God” that traditions approach through prayer. Spira argues that it is seeing ourselves as separate that makes God seem distant, and weaves his own invocations together with prayers and poetry from sacred texts. Published by Sahaja in July 2023, in The Essence of Meditation series.
The Shining of Being
His most recent book, published by Sahaja in July 2025. A short book of about 120 pages in The Essence of Meditation series, it invites the reader back to the familiar sense of “I am” and the still core of being which, in Spira’s words on the book’s page, needs no healing, perfecting or enlightening.
In What Order to Read Rupert Spira
Every book describes the same understanding from a different side, so there is no story to follow and no need for publication order. They fall into three groups: essays that argue the case (The Transparency of Things, the two volumes of Presence, The Nature of Consciousness), guided meditations taken from his meetings and retreats (from The Light of Pure Knowing to The Shining of Being), and short poetic books (The Ashes of Love, A Meditation on I Am).
Begin with You Are the Happiness You Seek. If you want the argument, go next to The Nature of Consciousness; if you want the practice, to Being Aware of Being Aware and the rest of The Essence of Meditation series. Transparent Body, Luminous World assumes you already know the earlier meditations.

How Rupert Spira Writes: Thinking Aloud with the Reader
Most of his books began as speech. Presence, Volume II grew out of a three-month study group; The Light of Pure Knowing, Transparent Body, Luminous World and the books of The Essence of Meditation series are guided meditations selected from hundreds he gave at meetings and retreats. On the page they keep the rhythm of a voice: short sentences, repetition, and constant invitations to the reader to check a claim against their own experience rather than take it on trust.
The essays work differently. The Nature of Consciousness argues step by step, starting from the “hard problem” of consciousness and engaging with panpsychism and with poets such as Wordsworth, which is why it carries an afterword by the philosopher Bernardo Kastrup. Spira draws on several traditions at once — Advaita Vedanta, Kashmir Shaivism, mystical Christianity and Sufism — but he rarely relies on quotation to make his case.
Across all of it, the subject barely changes: the self as the awareness in which experience appears, and happiness as the nature of that awareness. What changes is the approach, from argument to meditation to poetry. Readers who like that will find each book adds a new angle; readers who want variety of subject will find the books close to one another.
