Books Written by
In the late 1970s a young Mexican doctor fell asleep at the wheel and drove into a concrete wall. Miguel Ángel Ruiz, born in Tijuana in 1952 as the youngest of thirteen children, had trained in medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico; after the crash he went back to what his mother, a curandera (healer), and his grandfather, a nagual (shaman), had taught him. In 1986 he left medicine and moved to San Diego. His first book, The Four Agreements (1997), came out from a small press in San Rafael, California, stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for more than a decade and has been translated into 52 languages. This guide covers his 8 key books, in order, and where to begin.

8 Don Miguel Ruiz Books, in Order
The Four Agreements
Ruiz argues that people live by thousands of agreements with themselves, learned in childhood, that cause suffering, and offers four to replace them: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, always do your best. Written with Janet Mills and published by Amber-Allen in San Rafael, California, it was recommended by Oprah Winfrey on her show in 2001 and again in 2013. It has sold about 12 million copies in the United States and been translated into 52 languages.
The Mastery of Love
The second Toltec Wisdom book applies the same ideas to relationships. Ruiz looks at the fear-based beliefs that undermine love — self-rejection, the struggle for control between partners, looking for love outside yourself — and at how to heal emotional wounds and forgive yourself and others.
The Four Agreements Companion Book
A follow-up to The Four Agreements, written with Janet Mills, with further explanation of each agreement, practical exercises and stories from people who tried to put them into practice.
The Circle of Fire
A short collection of essays, prayers and guided meditations. It was first published in 2001 as Prayers: A Communion with Our Creator; Ruiz later renamed it after his favourite prayer, “The Circle of Fire”.
The Voice of Knowledge
The third main Toltec Wisdom book, written with Janet Mills. Its claim is that emotional suffering comes from believing lies, above all the lies we tell about ourselves, and that the way back to the joy of early childhood is to stop believing them.
The Fifth Agreement
Written with his son don José Ruiz, the sequel restates the original four and adds a fifth: “Be skeptical, but learn to listen.” Some reviewers found that it goes over the same ground as The Four Agreements without adding much.
The Toltec Art of Life and Death
Written with Barbara Emrys and published by HarperCollins, it starts from the heart attack Ruiz had in 2002, which left him in a coma for about nine weeks. While his body lies unconscious, his spirit revisits the people, ideas and events that shaped him, from his family to his teaching years.
The Three Questions
Written with Barbara Emrys and published by HarperOne, it builds on The Four Agreements around three questions: Who am I? What is real? How do I express love?
In What Order to Read Don Miguel Ruiz
RuizRuiz’s publisher groupsrsquo;s official website groups The Four Agreements, The Mastery of Love, The Voice of Knowledge, the Companion Book, The Circle of Fire and The Fifth Agreement as the Toltec Wisdom series. They are not a story, but each one assumes you know the four agreements, so read that book first.
After that, publication order works well. The Fifth Agreement restates the first four before adding a new one, so it can also serve as a refresher. The Toltec Art of Life and Death is different in kind: it is his life story, told as a spiritual journey, and makes most sense once you know the teaching.

How Don Miguel Ruiz Writes: Short Rules, Big Claims
Ruiz’s books are short and built around a small number of rules or questions: four agreements, then a fifth, then three questions. Each rule gets a chapter that states it, explains how people break it and describes what changes when they keep it. Most of the books were written with a collaborator, mainly Janet Mills, who shaped his talks into text.
His central image is the “dream”: the picture of the world each person learns from family and society in childhood, which he calls domestication. In his account, suffering comes from agreements made inside that dream, and freedom comes from breaking them. He presents this as Toltec knowledge passed down in his family, rather than as psychology, and backs it with stories and parables rather than evidence.
The plain language is the point. The agreements fit on one line each, which is why they circulate as quotes, posters and card decks, and why critics call them too simple. For more books in the same vein, see the guides to Eckhart Tolle and Michael A. Singer below.
Frequently asked questions about Don Miguel Ruiz’s books
How many books has Don Miguel Ruiz written?
More than a dozen, by his own count. This page lists 8 key books, from The Four Agreements (1997) to The Three Questions (2018), plus 3 more: Beyond Fear (1997) and two short gift books of extracts (2003). Most were written with a co-author.
What are Don Miguel Ruiz’s books in order?
The Four Agreements (1997), The Mastery of Love (1999), The Four Agreements Companion Book (2000), The Circle of Fire (2001, first called Prayers), The Voice of Knowledge (2004), The Fifth Agreement (2010), The Toltec Art of Life and Death (2015) and The Three Questions (2018).
Where should I start with Don Miguel Ruiz?
With The Four Agreements. It is short, and every later book assumes you know its four rules. Read The Mastery of Love next if you want them applied to relationships.
What is Don Miguel Ruiz’s most famous book?
The Four Agreements (1997). It stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for more than a decade, has sold about 12 million copies in the United States and has been translated into 52 languages.
What are the four agreements?
Be impeccable with your word. Don’t take anything personally. Don’t make assumptions. Always do your best.
What is the fifth agreement?
“Be skeptical, but learn to listen.” It comes from The Fifth Agreement (2010), which Ruiz wrote with his son don José Ruiz.
Did Oprah recommend The Four Agreements?
Yes. Oprah Winfrey recommended it on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2001 and again in 2013, when she interviewed Ruiz for Super Soul Sunday. In 2001 O, The Oprah Magazine also ran an interview with him by Ellen DeGeneres.
Was Don Miguel Ruiz really a doctor?
Yes. He studied medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, completed his internship in 1979 and practised as a surgeon with his older brother in Tijuana before leaving medicine in 1986. A car accident in the late 1970s, after which he described a near-death experience, turned him towards his family’s healing tradition.
Is the Toltec wisdom in his books historically Toltec?
Ruiz presents it as knowledge handed down in his family, through his mother and grandfather. It is not documented history of the Toltec civilisation of central Mexico, and the Wikipedia article on Toltecayotl notes that modern movements using the Toltec name make claims without proof. Read the books as his own teaching rather than as history.
Is Don Miguel Ruiz still alive?
Yes. He was born on 27 August 1952 in Tijuana. He survived a major heart attack in 2002, after which he was in a coma for about nine weeks, an experience he wrote about in The Toltec Art of Life and Death (2015).
