Books Written by Denis Johnson

Denis Johnson published his first book of poems in 1969, while still a student at the University of Iowa, and then spent most of his twenties addicted to drugs and alcohol, writing very little. He stopped drinking in 1978 and quit drugs in 1983, the year his first novel, Angels, came out. Nine years later came Jesus’ Son, eleven short stories told by a nameless young addict, which a 2006 New York Times Book Review poll placed among the best American fiction of the previous 25 years. Tree of Smoke, his Vietnam novel, won the National Book Award in 2007, and the film of his novella Train Dreams received four Academy Award nominations in 2026. This guide covers his thirteen key books, in order, and where to begin.

In What Order to Read Denis Johnson

None of his books continue from one another, but there is one link worth knowing: Bill Houston, the ex-convict of Angels, appears again as a young man in Tree of Smoke, so reading Angels first adds a layer. Otherwise read by mood. The crime books (Angels, Already Dead, Nobody Move, The Laughing Monsters) are the fastest; Fiskadoro and Resuscitation of a Hanged Man are the strangest.

A good route is to start short, with Jesus’ Son and Train Dreams, and only then take on Tree of Smoke. Save The Largesse of the Sea Maiden for last: he finished it shortly before he died, and several of its stories look back over a life.

How Denis Johnson Writes: Poet’s Sentences, Lost Narrators

Johnson published three books of poetry before his first novel, and it shows in the sentences: short, exact, and liable to turn without warning from the ugly to the beautiful in a single line. In Jesus’ Son the narrator describes car crashes, overdoses and a shooting in the same flat, matter-of-fact voice, and the shock comes from that calm.

His people are addicts, drifters, petty criminals, soldiers and spies, and many of them are looking for God without much hope of finding him. Johnson, who described himself in the essay “Bikers for Jesus” as “a Christian convert, but one of the airy, sophisticated kind”, lets the question of grace hang over even his crime novels. In Seek he turns the same attention on himself, writing about himself in the third person.

He moved between forms more than almost any American writer of his generation: poetry, plays written for the San Francisco company Campo Santo, a 600-page war novel, a magazine serial for Playboy, a novella of about 120 pages. Among his often-quoted rules for writing is “Write in exile, as if you are never going to get home again, and you have to call back every detail.”

Partly. Johnson was addicted to drugs and alcohol for most of his twenties, and he said he hesitated to publish the book because it was so personal. The narrator is never named, and the stories are fiction. The 1999 film, with Billy Crudup, gave Johnson a small role.

Did Denis Johnson win the Pulitzer Prize?
