When Nuance becomes Expensive

 

 

 

The thoughtful, nuanced creator – the person who considers both sides, who doesn’t chase outrage, who tries to add genuine value – is increasingly invisible because the algorithm doesn’t reward them.

Moderate content generates moderate engagement.
Moderate engagement gets moderate distribution.
And moderate distribution means you can’t pay your rent.

So the incentives push everyone toward the poles.

You either play it completely safe and stay small, or you push to the extreme and get amplified. The middle ground – where most useful, honest, balanced content lives – is the worst possible place to be commercially.

And this isn’t going away. The incentives are too strong. Until platforms change how they measure and reward engagement, until there’s a viable economic model for measured, thoughtful content that doesn’t require outrage to sustain itself, the content only gets more radical from here.
