Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
Noah tells his childhood as a series of standalone stories rather than a chronological arc — the years his mother had to disguise him as “coloured” so the family could walk together in public without being arrested, the years he ran a bootleg CD business and an unlicensed hip-hop night, the year his stepfather shot his mother in the head and she survived. Each chapter opens with a short piece of historical context on apartheid law, so the reader understands exactly what system each story is bouncing off of. The comic timing is real, but it’s always in service of something that isn’t funny at all.
This is a book about code-switching as a survival skill, which is exactly why it belongs next to anything on identity, belonging, and what shapes a person before they have any say in it. Noah’s mother, Patricia, is the actual protagonist — her stubbornness, her faith, her refusal to raise a son who saw himself as a victim. The book is funnier than its subject matter has any right to be, and that tension is the whole point.
