Books Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates

In 2000 Prince Jones, a Howard University student Ta-Nehisi Coates knew, was shot dead by an undercover police officer from Prince George’s County, Maryland. Fifteen years later Coates put that death at the centre of Between the World and Me, a short book written as a letter to his teenage son, which won the National Book Award. Born in Baltimore in 1975, the son of a former Black Panther who ran a small publishing house, Coates left Howard without a degree and spent ten years at The Atlantic, where “The Case for Reparations” (2014) made his name. He has also written a novel and five years of Black Panther for Marvel. This guide covers his five key books, in order, and where to begin.

The Message

There he argues that the Israeli occupation is a moral crime, the part of the book that drew the most criticism.

In What Order to Read Ta-Nehisi Coates

The books stand alone, so start with the subject that interests you. Read in order of publication, they show a journalist moving outward: from his own childhood in The Beautiful Struggle, to the country in Between the World and Me and the Obama essays, to history imagined in The Water Dancer, and to Africa and the Middle East in The Message.

The Beautiful Struggle works best after Between the World and Me, as the full story of the father and the Baltimore childhood the letter only sketches. The comics are a separate track: his Black Panther run starts with A Nation Under Our Feet (2016).

How Ta-Nehisi Coates Writes: History in the Second Person

Coates’s best-known book is addressed to one reader. Between the World and Me speaks to his son as “you” throughout, a form that follows James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time, which opens with a letter to Baldwin’s nephew. Coates turns big arguments about racism into the specific: the fear of the street in Baltimore, the beatings at home, the death of one friend.

His journalism works the other way, from long research to argument. He has said he spent nearly two years on “The Case for Reparations”, which builds a case for reparations out of the history of housing discrimination in Chicago. In We Were Eight Years in Power each of those Atlantic essays comes with a new introduction looking back at how it was written and what it missed.

The fiction and the comics bring the same concerns into genre: a superpower that comes from memory in The Water Dancer, and a Wakanda in revolt against its king in Black Panther. For writers who work in the same tradition, see Authors like James Baldwin.

How many books has Ta-Nehisi Coates written?

Five books: The Beautiful Struggle (2008), Between the World and Me (2015), We Were Eight Years in Power (2017), The Water Dancer (2019) and The Message (2024). He has also written comics for Marvel, mainly Black Panther and Captain America, which are collected in several volumes.

What are Ta-Nehisi Coates’s books in order?

The Beautiful Struggle (2008), Between the World and Me (2015), We Were Eight Years in Power (2017), The Water Dancer (2019) and The Message (2024).

Where should I start with Ta-Nehisi Coates?

With Between the World and Me. It is short, it won the National Book Award, and it introduces the themes of everything else he has written. If you prefer fiction, start with The Water Dancer.

What is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s most famous book?

Between the World and Me (2015), his letter to his son, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His most famous single essay is “The Case for Reparations” (2014).

Why was The Message controversial?

Most of the book describes a ten-day trip to the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 2023, where Coates argues that the Israeli occupation is a moral crime. Some critics, including Jennifer Szalai in The New York Times, questioned his decision not to discuss the 7 October attack or the war in Gaza; others praised the reporting. On 30 September 2024 the CBS Mornings anchor Tony Dokoupil challenged him on air, suggesting the section read like the work of an extremist. CBS executives later told staff the interview had not met the network’s standards, while others at CBS and Paramount defended Dokoupil.

Did Ta-Nehisi Coates write Black Panther?

Yes. He wrote Marvel’s Black Panther comic from 2016 to 2021, starting with artist Brian Stelfreeze, as well as Black Panther: World of Wakanda with Roxane Gay and Yona Harvey, which won an Eisner Award in 2018, and Captain America from 2018 to 2021.

Was Between the World and Me banned?

It was challenged. In 2023 two students at Chapin High School in South Carolina complained about an AP English lesson built on the book, and district officials told the teacher, Mary Wood, to stop teaching it. Coates wrote about the case in The Message.

Who is the son in Between the World and Me?

His son, Samori, who was a teenager when the book was published in 2015. The Message is dedicated to his sons, Samori and Chris.
