At 27, Davidson set out with four camels and a dog on a nine-month, 2,700-kilometer solo trek across the Australian desert to the Indian Ocean, a journey that became her bestselling memoir Tracks — never out of print in over 40 years and later adapted into a feature film. Her subsequent decades have followed a deliberately nomadic path, studying nomadic cultures in India and Tibet and continuing to write about solitude, movement, and what a life without fixed roots actually costs and offers.

Tracks remains her defining and most widely read book, though her later memoir Unfinished Woman offers a more reflective, retrospective account of the same life and the motivations Tracks left largely unexamined.
