When Indra Nooyi came home with the news that she had been made president of PepsiCo in 2001, her mother told her the news could wait and sent her out to buy milk: at home, she said, Nooyi should “leave that crown in the garage.” Born in Madras in 1955, Nooyi went to Yale in 1978, joined PepsiCo in 1994 and ran it as chief executive from 2006 to 2018, years in which Fortune five times put her first on its list of the most powerful women in business. In 2021 she published her only book, a memoir that ends as an argument about work and care. This guide covers her one book: what it is about and where to begin.

The Book by Indra Nooyi
My Life in Full
Nooyi’s memoir follows her from a Tamil family in Madras in the 1960s, where her grandfather drilled her in mathematics, to Yale School of Management as a young immigrant, then Boston Consulting Group, Motorola, ABB and PepsiCo. She describes moving PepsiCo towards healthier products and lower use of water and plastic, and the cost of the job to her family. The last part argues for paid leave, better care systems and flexible work. Published by Portfolio on 28 September 2021 (320 pages); Kirkus Reviews called it “full of heart”.
How to Read Indra Nooyi
There is only one book, so there is no order to work out. My Life in Full is told chronologically: childhood and education first, then the career, then the policy argument. The early chapters on Madras and her family set up much of what comes later, including her mother’s milk-and-crown remark, so it is worth reading from the start rather than skipping to PepsiCo.
If you want the background to the book, her remarks at the Aspen Ideas Festival in 2014, that women cannot “have it all”, are the public version of the dilemma the memoir works through at length.

How Indra Nooyi Writes: A Career Told Through Family
My Life in Full is a chronological memoir, and much of its detail is domestic: the food her mother served, the convent school, the girl band she played in, and her grandfather, whose rule was that if you take something on you must give it your all. The family is not background to the career; it is the measure she keeps returning to.
She is specific about how she was treated at work. At a summer job with Booz Allen she wore a sari every day and was never taken to see the client; at ABB a boss called her “babe” and “sweetie” until she felt secure enough to leave. She also records her own methods as a chief executive, such as the hundreds of letters she wrote over ten years to the parents and spouses of her senior managers. Kirkus Reviews noted that she is candid about privilege and regret and does not overstate her successes.
The book ends by turning her experience into an argument. She writes that she would have quit BCG to be with her father when he was diagnosed with cancer if the firm had not offered her paid leave, and uses that to make the case for paid leave, care systems and flexible work as economic policy rather than private problems.

What is My Life in Full about?
Her life from a Tamil family in 1960s Madras to Yale, consulting, Motorola, ABB and twelve years as chief executive of PepsiCo, where she moved the company towards healthier products and lower use of water and plastic. It ends with an argument for paid leave, better care systems and flexible work.
What is the “leave the crown in the garage” story?
When Nooyi told her mother she had been made president of PepsiCo, her mother said the news could wait and asked her to go out and get milk. At home, she told her, Nooyi was a wife, a mother and a daughter, so she should “leave that crown in the garage.” Nooyi tells the story in My Life in Full.
Why was Indra Nooyi criticised for her comments about women?
Two remarks drew wide debate. At the Aspen Ideas Festival in 2014 she said, “I don’t think women can have it all. I just don’t think so,” and that her daughters might not say she had been a good mother. And on Freakonomics Radio in January 2018 she said women “don’t like to crunch too loudly in public” and that PepsiCo was getting ready to launch products for them; after headlines about “lady Doritos”, PepsiCo said reports of a specific Doritos product for women were inaccurate.
What was Performance with Purpose?
The strategy Nooyi set for PepsiCo: long-term growth combined with healthier products and a smaller environmental footprint. She sorted the company’s products into “fun for you”, “better for you” and “good for you”. Some analysts doubted the approach, and the push towards health had setbacks: aspartame was taken out of Diet Pepsi in 2015 and put back in 2016 after customers objected.
