5 Ethan Hawke Books, in Order
The Hottest State
William Harding, a twenty-year-old actor, falls in love with Sarah, an aspiring singer. Hawke wrote and directed the film adaptation, released in 2006.
Ash Wednesday
His second novel, published six years after the first. It reached The New York Times bestseller list.
Rules for a Knight
A short book written as the last letter of a fifteenth-century knight, Sir Thomas Lemuel Hawke, to his children, setting out the rules he has tried to live by. Illustrated by Ryan Hawke.
Indeh
A graphic novel, written by Hawke and drawn by Greg Ruth, about the Apache Wars.
A Bright Ray of Darkness
William Harding, a thirty-two-year-old film actor, makes his Broadway debut as Hotspur in Shakespeare’s Henry IV just after his marriage to a superstar singer has ended because of his infidelity. The novel draws on Hawke’s own acting career; The Washington Post critic Ron Charles called it a “witty, wise and heartfelt novel”.
In What Order to Read Ethan Hawke
The books are independent, so read by interest. The three novels share a subject, young men learning to love and work, and The Hottest State and A Bright Ray of Darkness share a hero’s name, William Harding.
Rules for a Knight and Indeh are different kinds of book: one a short book of principles, the other a historical graphic novel. Read them for their subjects rather than as part of the novels.

How Ethan Hawke Writes
Hawke’s novels follow young men who act, love and get it wrong. Their subjects are love, ambition and the gap between the two, and they draw openly on his own life as an actor.
A Bright Ray of Darkness uses a production of Henry IV, with its theme of a young man growing up, as a frame for an actor’s collapse and recovery. He has said that writing his first novel was “the scariest thing I ever did” and also “one of the best things I ever did”.
Outside the novels he works by collaboration and form: Rules for a Knight borrows the shape of a medieval letter, and Indeh was made with the illustrator Greg Ruth. The same pattern runs through his screenwriting, co-written with Linklater and Delpy.
