For Juno (2007), the film that made him famous, Elliot Page was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. In December 2020, by then known to millions from Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, he announced that he is trans. Pageboy, published in June 2023, is his account of the years in between and before: growing up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, working as a child actor, and and the homophobia he met in the film industry. It is not told in order; the chapters move back and forth in time. This guide covers his 1 key book, in order, and where to begin.

1 Elliot Page Book
Pageboy
Published by Flatiron Books in June 2023. Page writes about growing up in Halifax, acting from a young age, the film industry after Juno and the homophobia he describes there, and his coming out and transition. The chapters move back and forth in time rather than in date order. It became a number one New York Times bestseller.
How to Read Elliot Page’s Book
Pageboy is his only book, and it is not chronological: chapters about his teenage years in Halifax sit next to chapters about film sets and premieres and about the years after his transition. Readers who want the outline first can keep three dates in mind: Juno in 2007, coming out as gay in 2014 and as trans in December 2020.
The documentary he co-directed, There’s Something in the Water (2019), and the travel series Gaycation (2016–2017) show the activist side of his work that the book touches on.

How Elliot Page Writes
Pageboy is written in short chapters that jump in time rather than a single before-and-after story: a scene from a film set is followed by a memory from school in Halifax, then by something from his life after transition.
The book is direct about the film industry, and about the homophobia he describes meeting there after Juno made him famous.
It is also a book about gender and about coming out, in 2014 and again in 2020. For other memoirs by actors who grew up in the industry, see the guide to Jennette McCurdy and the reading lists below.
