Books Written by Demi Moore

In its first week, in September 2019, Inside Out sold 39,909 copies and went straight to number one on The New York Times nonfiction list. Demi Moore, the star of St. Elmo’s Fire, Ghost and, later, The Substance, had first planned the book for her fiftieth birthday in 2012. When it appeared seven years later, written with the journalist Ariel Levy, it covered her mother’s suicide attempts, being raped at 15, her three marriages, a pregnancy lost at 42, and addiction and recovery. This guide covers her one book: what it is about and where to begin.

How to Read Demi Moore

There is one book, and it is told in chronological order, from her childhood in the 1960s to the years after her divorce from Ashton Kutcher in 2013.

Readers should know that it describes sexual assault, suicide attempts and substance use directly. The book appeared before The Substance (2024), so it does not cover the late-career revival that followed.

How Demi Moore Writes: A Life Told Straight

Inside Out is a chronological memoir, written with Ariel Levy, a staff writer at The New Yorker. It moves from her childhood to her fifties in order, without the essay structure many celebrity memoirs use.

The book is notable for what it states plainly: the assault at 15, her mother’s illness and death in 1998, her own drinking and drug use, and private details of her marriage to Ashton Kutcher. Kirkus Reviews called it a “forthright revelation of hard-won survival”, and The Sunday Times an “astonishingly candid memoir”.

Her film career is present but secondary: the book is mainly about her family, her relationships and her recovery.
