Anthony Doerr spent ten years on All the Light We Cannot See, most of it on research, after an idea that came to him on a train in 2004. The novel had a first print run of 60,000 copies; by September 2021 it had sold more than 15 million, after more than 200 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and it won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Doerr, born in Cleveland in 1973 to a mother who taught high-school science, had by then already published two story collections, a novel and a memoir, and won the Story Prize and several O. Henry Prizes. He lives in Boise, Idaho. This guide covers his six key books, in order, and where to begin.

6 Anthony Doerr Books, in Order
The Shell Collector
Eight unconnected stories set in places such as the Lamu Archipelago off Kenya, Montana, Maine and Liberia during its civil war. In the title story a blind retired scientist who collects shells is pressed into the role of healer after a cone-shell sting appears to cure a visitor of malaria. The book won the Barnes & Noble Discover Prize and the Young Lions Fiction Award, and “The Hunter’s Wife” and “The Shell Collector” each won an O. Henry Prize.
About Grace
David Winkler, a hydrologist from Anchorage, has dreams that come true. When he dreams that he will drown his infant daughter Grace in a flood, he abandons his family in Ohio and spends some twenty-five years in exile in the Grenadine Islands. The novel opens as he flies home at 59 to find out what happened. It won the Ohioana Book Award in 2005.
Four Seasons in Rome
A memoir of the year Doerr spent in Rome on a fellowship at the American Academy in Rome, with his wife and their newborn twin sons. It covers sleepless nights, the city’s history and the death and funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005, while he struggled with the novel that later became All the Light We Cannot See.
Memory Wall
Six stories about memory, set on four continents. In the title story Alma Konachek, a 74-year-old widow in a Cape Town suburb, has her memories recorded on cartridges, and a young “memory tapper” searches them for the location of a fossil her late husband found in the Great Karoo. Other stories follow a couple through IVF and an American soldier in Korea. It won The Story Prize and the Ohioana Book Award in 2011.
All the Light We Cannot See
Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind girl from Paris, flees with her father to her great-uncle’s house in Saint-Malo in 1940; Werner Pfennig, an orphan from a German mining town with a gift for radios, is trained to track illegal transmitters. Their paths cross during the bombardment of Saint-Malo in August 1944, while a Nazi gemologist hunts for a diamond called the Sea of Flames. It won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Andrew Carnegie Medal, and was a National Book Award finalist. Netflix released a four-part series based on it in 2023.
Cloud Cuckoo Land
Five characters in three eras are linked by a fictional ancient Greek tale, credited to the real second-century writer Antonius Diogenes: Anna and Omeir at the fall of Constantinople in 1453; Zeno, an elderly librarian, and Seymour, a troubled teenager, in a small-town library in Idaho; and Konstance, a girl on the interstellar ship Argos. Doerr wrote the ancient story himself. It was a finalist for the 2021 National Book Award and won the Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine in France in 2022.
In What Order to Read Anthony Doerr
None of Doerr’s books continue from one another, so you can start anywhere. Most readers begin with All the Light We Cannot See, and Cloud Cuckoo Land is the natural next step: it has the same short, alternating sections and the same interest in children, books and science, spread over a much longer stretch of time.
The two story collections show where those novels came from: the shells, fossils, rivers and weather that fill them were already there in The Shell Collector and Memory Wall. Read Four Seasons in Rome once you know All the Light, because it shows him working on that novel without yet knowing what it would become.

How Anthony Doerr Writes: Science, Small Things and Short Chapters
Doerr studied history, not science, but his mother was a science teacher, and the natural world runs through everything he writes: the cone shells of The Shell Collector, the hydrology of About Grace, the fossils of “Memory Wall”, the radio waves of All the Light We Cannot See. He has also written a column on science books for The Boston Globe. Characters are often defined by what they can identify and name.
His big novels are built from very short sections that cut between characters and between times, and they often open near the end and work back. All the Light starts on 7 August 1944, with leaflets falling on Saint-Malo, and then goes back to the years before the war; Cloud Cuckoo Land moves between 1453, the present and a future spaceship. Some critics, including Ron Charles in The Washington Post, found the structure of Cloud Cuckoo Land convoluted.
He researches heavily: most of the ten years on All the Light went into research, including a visit to Saint-Malo in 2005. In Cloud Cuckoo Land he goes a step further and invents an ancient text, credited to Antonius Diogenes, drawing on Diogenes’s lost Wonders Beyond Thule and Apuleius’s The Golden Ass, so that the novel can be about how a book survives.

Is All the Light We Cannot See a true story?
No. The characters are invented, but the setting is real: the siege and bombing of Saint-Malo in Brittany in August 1944. Doerr got the idea on a train ride in 2004, visited Saint-Malo in 2005 and spent about ten years on the book, most of it on research.
