Books Written by
A. Hameed Ali was born in Kuwait in 1944, caught polio at eighteen months and has walked with a crutch ever since. At eighteen he moved to California to study at Berkeley, and he was working on a PhD in physics when he started going to workshops at the Esalen Institute. By 1971 he was in a group led by the psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo; in 1976 he founded the Ridhwan School, where he and Karen Johnson teach what they call the Diamond Approach. He writes as A. H. Almaas — almaas is Arabic for diamond — and his books set Western depth psychology beside the language of mysticism. This guide covers his 13 key books, in order, and where to begin.

13 A. H. Almaas Books, in Order
Essence
His first full presentation of the Diamond Approach. Almaas distinguishes Essence, the true nature he says is present in everyone, from the personality that develops over it, and describes its different aspects, such as strength, will, compassion, joy and peace. Weiser reissued it in 1998 together with his earlier short book The Elixir of Enlightenment.
The Void
A study of the self-image and the boundaries of the ego, and of the inner spaciousness that Almaas says opens when those structures are understood rather than defended. It draws on Western ego psychology. Shambhala published a second edition in 2000 as part of the Diamond Mind series.
The Pearl Beyond Price
The book reads the psychological theory of ego development, especially object relations theory, alongside spiritual realisation. Its subject is what he calls the personal essence, the “pearl beyond price”: being a real, autonomous person rather than a self built from images and early relationships. Shambhala reissued it in 2000 in the Diamond Mind series.
Luminous Night’s Journey
Excerpts from Almaas’s own journal, following one thread of his inner path. The entries describe how the experiences he calls the unveiling of Being exposed and dissolved ego structures, and how he worked to bring that realisation into ordinary life.
The Point of Existence
The third Diamond Mind book treats narcissism not only as a disorder but as a basic condition of the ego, which he links to the loss of contact with one’s essential identity. Almaas works through the psychology of the self and describes how that identity can be recovered.
Facets of Unity
A book on the Enneagram that leaves the personality types in the background. Almaas describes nine “Holy Ideas”, objective understandings of reality, and argues that each type’s fixation grows out of losing touch with one of them. It was first published by Diamond Books in Berkeley.
Spacecruiser Inquiry
A book about inquiry, the open-ended questioning of one’s own experience that is the main practice of the Diamond Approach, and about the inner guidance that Almaas says can direct it. It is part of Shambhala’s Diamond Body series.
The Inner Journey Home
A long, systematic account of the whole teaching, built around the soul as the living field of consciousness that develops, gets lost in ego and can realise its true nature. The subtitle names its end point: the unity of reality.
The Unfolding Now
A practical book on being present with whatever one is experiencing, without rejecting or chasing it. Its chapters include exercises. It belongs to the Diamond Body series.
Runaway Realization
Almaas argues against the idea of enlightenment as a final state to be reached. In his later view realisation keeps unfolding without end, and any single realisation, however deep, is one way reality shows itself rather than the destination.
Keys to the Enneagram
A return to the Enneagram more than twenty years after Facets of Unity, working type by type towards the spiritual potential he sees in each. The foreword is by Russ Hudson, co-founder of the Enneagram Institute.
Nondual Love
Almaas treats love as central to the spiritual path and moves from personal love to what he calls Divine Love, a love without boundaries that is true nature itself. He also discusses what gets in the way, such as belief in a separate self, and each chapter includes an inquiry or practice on themes such as attachment, desire, surrender and grace.
The Inner Beloved
His newest book, published by Shambhala in 2026, describes the spiritual path as a journey of love. It starts from the dissatisfaction left by relationships, possessions and experiences, and follows the turn inward towards a formless Beloved, through emptiness to a sense of unity between lover and Beloved, with reflections, personal insights and exercises.
In What Order to Read A. H. Almaas
The books are not a series in the novel sense, but some of them come in sets. The Diamond Heart books are edited talks to his students, the Diamond Mind books (The Void, The Pearl Beyond Price, The Point of Existence) set out the psychological theory, and the Diamond Body books (Spacecruiser Inquiry, Brilliancy, The Unfolding Now) are about practice.
A good order is Essence first, then the first Diamond Heart volume or The Unfolding Now for the practice, and the Diamond Mind books after that. The Inner Journey Home pulls everything together and works best once the vocabulary is familiar.

How A. H. Almaas Writes: Psychology and Mysticism Together
Almaas was trained as a scientist, and he writes like one: he defines terms, builds distinctions and returns to them. Much of his vocabulary comes from Western psychology — ego structure, self-image, object relations, narcissism — and the Diamond Mind books read in places like clinical theory. The other half comes from mysticism, where he writes about Being, Essence, the soul and the Beloved.
The link between the two is what he calls inquiry: staying with one’s actual experience, including painful states, and asking about it with curiosity rather than trying to fix it. A central idea is the “theory of holes”: when an essential quality is lost in childhood, a sense of deficiency is left behind, and the personality grows up to fill it. Many of his books, especially the Diamond Heart series, began as talks to students, so they move by example and dialogue as much as by argument.
His later books shift from the structure of the self to love and to a view in which realisation has no end point. The language becomes more poetic, but the method of questioning experience stays the same.

Who is A. H. Almaas?
A. H. Almaas is the pen name of A. Hameed Ali, a spiritual teacher and writer born in Kuwait in 1944 and based in the United States. He studied physics at Berkeley, worked with Claudio Naranjo in the early 1970s and founded the Ridhwan School in 1976.
What is the Diamond Approach?
The spiritual teaching Almaas developed with Karen Johnson and teaches through the Ridhwan School. It combines inquiry into one’s own experience with ideas from Western psychology, aiming at the realisation of what he calls Essence, or true nature. The name comes from his pen name: almaas is Arabic for diamond.
