Deborah Levy was born in Johannesburg in 1959. Her father, the historian Norman Levy, was a member of the ANC, and the apartheid government placed him under a banning order from 1964 until the family left for London in 1968. She trained at Dartington College of Arts, wrote plays and novels through the 1980s and 1990s, and was in her fifties when Swimming Home (2011), set in a villa above Nice, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize; Hot Milk followed it onto the shortlist in 2016. Between the novels she wrote three short books she calls a “living autobiography”, from Things I Don’t Want to Know (2013) to Real Estate (2021), about writing, motherhood and starting again after the end of a marriage. The ten writers below share her subject: a woman working out, on the page and in public, what kind of life she is free to make.
