Andy Dawson is thirty-five, a stand-up comedian whose gigs are not going well, and Jen has ended it after nearly four years. He starts a list called Reasons Why It's Good I'm Not With Jen, which includes both that she was always on at him about biting his nails and that she pretended to be unsure about wanting children when he thinks she just did not want them with him. He moves into a spare room belonging to Morris, a retired conspiracy theorist who writes fan letters to Julian Assange. Then, forty-four sections in, at the moment Andy is about to walk on stage with the material this has all become, the novel hands the microphone to Jen. Good Material (Fig Tree, November 2023, 336 pages) was a New York Times top ten book of 2024 and was shortlisted for the Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction. Alderton was born in London in 1988, wrote a dating column for The Sunday Times Style, co-created the podcast The High Low, and won a National Book Award in Britain for Everything I Know About Love (2018), which the BBC filmed in 2022. Her stated aim for the novel was the altered state of heartbreak and how mad it can make you feel. The ten below cover the comedy, the heartbreak and the objection.

Quick answer
If you love Dolly Alderton, the closest match is Nick Hornby: High Fidelity is the same book thirty years earlier, a man in his thirties making lists about a woman who has left. Nora Ephron wrote the funny break-up novel first and best. Marian Keyes and Meg Mason put real damage under the comedy, Coco Mellors and Bella Mackie are the closest contemporaries, and Sally Rooney is the serious version of the same generation. Rachel Cusk is the argument against: the same subject with the charm removed.

Frequently asked questions about authors like Dolly Alderton
Who should I read if I love Dolly Alderton?
Nick Hornby is the closest — High Fidelity is recognisably the same novel three decades earlier. Nora Ephron invented the funny break-up book, and Marian Keyes and Meg Mason are the two writers who put genuine damage under the same comic register. Coco Mellors and Bella Mackie are her closest contemporaries, Nina Stibbe the match for the memoir rather than the novels, and Caitlin Moran the template for the career. Sally Rooney is the serious version of the same generation. Rachel Cusk is the argument against everything Alderton does.
Which Dolly Alderton book should I start with?
Good Material (2023) if you want the best written: a break-up narrated by a thirty-five-year-old male comedian, with the final section handed to the woman who left him. Everything I Know About Love (2018) if you want the one that made her name, a memoir of female friendship in her twenties in London, which won a National Book Award in Britain and became a BBC series. Ghosts (2020) is the first novel, about a food writer being ghosted while her father develops dementia. Dear Dolly (2022) collects the advice columns.
Is Dolly Alderton writing a new book?
Nothing has been announced as of September 2026. Her four books appeared in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023, so the gap is longer than usual, and she has been working in television alongside the writing. She continues to write her column for The Sunday Times Style, which is the most reliable place to see what she is thinking about.
Why is Good Material written from a man's point of view?
She has said she wanted to write about someone completely different from herself, and to explore how heartbreak presents differently in a man. Andy is invented, but she interviewed a number of men about their own break-ups first, and she was specifically interested in the comedy and the tragedy of a man of that generation feeling obliged to present as functional while everything inside is coming apart. Several of the men she spoke to told her they could not discuss their feelings with male friends they would otherwise die for.
What happens in the last section?
After forty-four sections narrated by Andy, at the moment he is about to perform the stand-up material his break-up has produced, the novel switches to Jen and gives her the final part. Readers routinely report the same experience: having spent three hundred pages entirely on Andy's side, willing her to change her mind, they discover a version of the relationship they had no access to. It is the structural decision that lifts the book above the tradition it comes from, and it is why Hornby is the right comparison and also the insufficient one.
Is Everything I Know About Love a memoir or a novel?
A memoir, and specifically about female friendship in her twenties rather than about romance, despite the title. It covers London house shares, bad dates, drinking, jobs in television and the slow discovery that the friendships were the load-bearing relationships all along. It won the National Book Award in Britain for autobiography of the year and became a BBC One series in 2022, which relocated and reshaped a good deal of it. Read the book first.
What is the criticism of Dolly Alderton?
That the world is narrow and the warmth is a technique. Her books are set among educated, largely white, largely middle-class Londoners with media-adjacent jobs, and the emotional insight has been described as column-shaped — arriving in neat, quotable, well-timed units. The counter is that Good Material is genuinely well built, that the Jen section is a real structural risk, and that being consoling is not the same as being easy. Rachel Cusk is the fastest way to test the objection, because she was destroyed for doing the opposite.
What should I read after Good Material?
Hornby for the ancestor, Meg Mason if you want the same comedy attached to something that actually wounds, and Nora Ephron because she is short and better than both. If it was the London and the friendships you liked rather than the break-up, Nina Stibbe and Coco Mellors. And Sally Rooney if you want to know what the same generation looks like written by someone who is not trying to make you feel better.
