Cusk built her early reputation on conventional, well-reviewed novels before radically reinventing her own form with the Outline trilogy — three novels narrated by a woman who mostly listens to other people’s stories rather than telling her own, a technique she developed partly in response to the backlash her earlier, more candid memoirs received. She’s widely considered one of the most formally daring and philosophically serious British novelists working today.

Outline is the essential starting point and the book that redefined her career, though her earlier memoirs Aftermath and A Life’s Work show the more directly autobiographical writing that led her toward the trilogy’s radical restraint.
