Books Written by Kurt Cobain
Kurt Cobain was a musician, not an author, and he wrote exactly one book — except he didn’t write it, not in the sense that word usually implies. Journals is a facsimile collection of pages pulled from more than twenty spiral-bound notebooks he filled over roughly a decade, published eight years after his death by a widow who had to decide whether the world had any right to see them. People searching for “the Kurt Cobain diaries” and people searching for “Kurt Cobain’s book” are looking for the same thing. This page covers what it is, what’s actually in it, and why it exists at all.

The short answer
“Kurt Cobain’s diaries” and “Journals” are the same book
Journals (2002) is the only book carrying Cobain’s name as author, and it’s a facsimile reproduction of his actual private notebooks.
He didn’t write it for publication
These were private notebooks never intended as a manuscript. Courtney Love decided, after his death, to publish selected pages as they were, unedited.
JournalsAlso known as: the Kurt Cobain diaries
Published by Riverhead Books in November 2002, eight years after Cobain’s death, Journals reproduces facsimile pages from more than twenty spiral notebooks he left behind: diary entries, drafted and unsent letters, shopping lists, drawings, comic strips, and early lyric sheets. The handwriting is left exactly as he wrote it, misspellings included, with no editorial commentary added to explain what any of it means. It opened at number one on the New York Times bestseller list for nonfiction.
What’s actually inside Journals
The 280 pages are undated but arranged in roughly chronological order, and the content splits into a few recurring categories:
- Nirvana-related material — early lyric drafts showing how songs changed before recording. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” went through major revisions; “Come as You Are” changed very little from the version on the page.
- Album planning — a proposed tracklist for Nevermind splitting songs into “girl” and “boy” sides, with “In Bloom” and “Lithium” on one side and “Sliver” and “Polly” on the other, a sequencing idea that never made it to the final release.
- Letters — drafted or unsent notes to Dale Crover of the Melvins, Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill, Eugene Kelly of the Vaselines, a tender letter to Courtney Love, a thank-you to The Advocate after his 1992 interview with the magazine, an angry letter to MTV, and the letter he and Krist Novoselic wrote firing an early drummer from the band.
- Lists and drawings — favorite bands and albums, shopping lists, sketches, and comic strips, mixed in with no separation from the more revealing entries.
