The Wife Between Us
A woman watches her ex-husband’s new fiancée with what looks like jealousy and obsession. The whole novel runs on withheld information about who is watching whom, and why, and the second half dismantles what you assumed in the first. The book that plays the Gone Girl game most directly, using your own assumptions about victim and manipulator against you.
Behind Closed Doors
From the outside, Jack and Grace have the marriage everyone envies: he’s charming, she’s devoted, their home is immaculate. Behind closed doors it’s closer to captivity. Gone Girl asks what a marriage looks like when both partners are lying; this asks what happens when only one is performing, so well that everyone, including you for a while, believes it.
My Lovely Wife
A suburban couple with two kids and a tennis club membership are partners in something far darker, which keeps their marriage alive. The husband narrates, calm and reasonable, and that’s what makes it so unsettling. Gone Girl’s premise pushed one step further: both spouses already know the other’s darkness, and the marriage is built around it.
