Love, hidden till found.

Love, hidden till found.

In the arts we often overemphasize the idea that we can know what others will love. We think we can predict the next number 1 hit song, we think we can predict that wide pipe jeans are going to be there next season.

But creating something new based on what others will love is always rooted in what’s already been made. Everything we already know and are familiar with gets a little less exciting over time.

The irony is that people don’t really know what they love until they find it. Look at the iPad. I never thought I needed one since I already had a phone and a laptop which could function the same, but it turned out pretty handy.

What other people will love is this sliding scale. It is a very unreliable compass to navigate with. We, ourselves, don’t even know until it strikes us.

So in the pursuit of creating new things, what path to follow or to take? If we want to surprise ourselves and others and not get bored, we must practice this muscle to try things that we don’t know how it turns out. Be a little risky. I believe making a piece of writing or a new dish should be about you first.

Thanks for reading! The journal prompt of today:

What have you found, and what are you obsessing over?

Please let me know in the comments.
