From first prizes to guest editors

The award was first presented in 1919, funded by the Society of Arts and Sciences, with a collection titled Prize Stories 1919: The O. Henry Memorial Awards; its first winner was Margaret Prescott Montague for “England to America”. Until 2002 the editors named first, second and third prize winners. From 2003 to 2019, under series editor Laura Furman, three jurors each picked a story of special interest or merit from the selection.

In 2009 the series became the PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories, in partnership with PEN American Center. After a gap in 2020, the series returned in 2021 with a new format and title: a single guest editor chooses twenty stories, and the book is called The Best Short Stories with the year, subtitled The O. Henry Prize Winners. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was the first guest editor.

Guest editors and eligible stories

Eligible stories are those published in American or Canadian periodicals, and stories in translation are included; in 2022 the series also opened to African magazines. The 2026 edition, for example, includes four translated stories, from Galician, Russian, French and Spanish.

The guest editors since 2021 have been Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2021), Valeria Luiselli (2022), Lauren Groff (2023), Amor Towles (2024), Edward P. Jones (2025) and Tommy Orange (2026). Earlier series editors included Blanche Colton Williams (1919–32), Harry Hansen, Paul Engle, William Abrahams (1967–96), Larry Dark and Laura Furman; Jenny Minton Quigley is the current series editor.
