Books Written by Douglas Stuart

At least thirty publishers turned down Shuggie Bain before the American independent Grove Atlantic took it. Douglas Stuart had written it over about ten years while working as a senior director of design at Banana Republic in New York. In November 2020 the debut won the Booker Prize, only the second win for a Scottish writer, after James Kelman in 1994. Stuart grew up in Sighthill, a housing estate in Glasgow, and lost his mother to alcoholism when he was sixteen. All three of his novels are about boys growing up queer in places that punish it. This guide covers his three key books, in order, and where to begin.

Shuggie Bain

Douglas Stuart · Booker Prize · 2020

Glasgow from 1981 to 1992. In What Order to Read Douglas Stuart

The three novels are not a series: no characters carry over, and each stands alone. Publication order is still the natural way in. Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo share a city and a decade, and read together as a pair about Glasgow after the closure of its heavy industry. John of John leaves the city for the Outer Hebrides and moves the focus from mothers to a father.

All three deal with alcoholism, violence or sexual abuse, often in detail. Young Mungo is the hardest going of the three.

Douglas Stuart on Shuggie Bain

Recorded at the Louisiana Literature festival in Denmark in August 2021, Stuart talks to Synne Rifbjerg about how his own childhood and his mother shaped Shuggie Bain.

How Douglas Stuart Writes: Glasgow from the Inside

Stuart writes from close to his own life without writing memoir. Like Shuggie, he grew up in Sighthill with a mother who drank, and he has said in interviews that her effort to keep up appearances shaped Agnes, who dresses up and holds her head high while the household falls apart. He wrote that book over about a decade and has said that part of the reason it took so long was that he did not want to let the characters go.

His Glasgow is specific: tenements and council estates, pit villages left behind after the mines closed, Protestant and Catholic gangs, and long stretches of dialogue in Glaswegian Scots. Critics have compared him to Dickens for the scale of the poverty and the large casts of drinkers, neighbours and hangers-on, and he gives the most damaged characters, Agnes above all, the same tenderness as the children.

The violence in his books is direct and the endings are not consoling, which some reviewers found too much in Young Mungo. What holds the three novels together is a single situation: a boy who is different, and the adults who either cannot protect him or will not. In John of John he turns it round and gives the father the same secret as the son.

Frequently asked questions about Douglas Stuart’s books

How many books has Douglas Stuart written?

Three novels: Shuggie Bain (2020), Young Mungo (2022) and John of John (2026). He has also published three pieces of short fiction in The New Yorker.

What are Douglas Stuart’s books in order?

Shuggie Bain (2020), Young Mungo (2022) and John of John (2026).

Where should I start with Douglas Stuart?

With Shuggie Bain, his Booker-winning debut. The novels are not connected, so if you would rather start with a love story, Young Mungo works just as well on its own.

What is Douglas Stuart’s most famous book?

Shuggie Bain (2020), which won the Booker Prize in November 2020 and had sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide by April 2022.

Is Shuggie Bain based on a true story?

Partly. Stuart grew up in Sighthill in Glasgow, the setting of the opening chapters, and his mother died of alcoholism when he was sixteen. He has described the book as fiction drawn from his own life, and dedicated it to her.

Are Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo connected?

No. They share a city, Glasgow, and a period, the 1980s and 1990s, but no characters. Each novel stands alone, and so does John of John.

Is Shuggie Bain being made into a TV series?

Yes. In 2022 the BBC and A24 announced a television adaptation, written by Stuart himself and filmed in Scotland. In 2023 they announced an adaptation of Young Mungo as well, again written by Stuart.

Has Douglas Stuart won the Booker Prize twice?

Not so far. He won in 2020 with Shuggie Bain, and John of John was shortlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize on 22 September 2026. If it wins, he would be the second-fastest returning winner after Hilary Mantel.

What is John of John about?

Cal MacLeod, a 22-year-old art-school graduate, comes home to his father’s croft on the Isle of Harris in the late 1990s. His father John is a weaver and a deacon in a strict Presbyterian church, and both men are hiding their sexuality from each other.
