Books Written by
In 1976 Wayne Dyer, an associate professor of counselling at St. John’s University in New York, published a book built on his lectures about guilt, worry and the need for approval. Your Erroneous Zones spent 64 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and reached number one in May 1977. Dyer, who spent much of his first ten years in foster care in Detroit, left teaching to tour the country with it, and over the next four decades turned from practical psychology to Lao Tzu, St. Francis and “the power of intention”, becoming a fixture of American public television along the way. This guide covers his 14 key books, in order, and where to begin.

14 Wayne Dyer Books, in Order
Your Erroneous Zones
His first self-help book, published by Funk & Wagnalls in April 1976. Its chapters argue that feelings are reactions we choose, and take on approval-seeking, guilt, worry, fear of the unknown and 35 self-limiting “I’m” statements. It spent 64 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and reached number one in May 1977; HarperCollins’s current edition claims more than 35 million copies sold. The psychologist Albert Ellis said it borrowed from his Rational Emotive Therapy without proper credit.
Pulling Your Own Strings
A book about not being manipulated: Dyer argues that people are largely responsible for how much others control them, and gives strategies for dealing with family members, bosses and institutions. Its paperback edition advertised more than three million copies sold. A 1982 review in Reason called it a “one-issue book” about avoiding victimisation.
The Sky’s the Limit
A 383-page book from Simon & Schuster about living without self-imposed limits, with chapters such as “Transcending Authoritarian Thinking”. Reason’s reviewer found much of it “recycled Maslow, Nathaniel Branden, and early Dyer”.
You’ll See It When You Believe It
The start of his spiritual turn, published by Morrow in 1989. Dyer argues that belief shapes perception and that there is no such thing as coincidence, writing on abundance, detachment, synchronicity and forgiveness. He describes how forgiving his father, who had abandoned the family, changed his life.
Real Magic
Dyer’s argument that people create their inner and outer lives through belief and purpose, and that meditation, openness to divine guidance and a reality beyond the five senses can produce “real magic” in health, money and relationships. Kirkus placed it alongside Deepak Chopra and Krishnamurti and credited Dyer with making these ideas accessible to a mainstream audience.
Your Sacred Self
Published by HarperCollins in 1995. Dyer separates a higher, invisible self from the ego, which he calls false, and proposes four steps for living from the higher self: banish doubt, observe yourself, quiet the inner dialogue and stop following the ego. Kirkus called it practical but unoriginal, a blend of Hindu non-dualism and American self-help.
Manifest Your Destiny
A short book of nine principles for attracting what you want, from changing your beliefs about what is possible to meditation, detachment from outcomes and gratitude. Publishers Weekly noted that it drops the usual affirmations, quotes and anecdotes of the genre.
Wisdom of the Ages
Sixty short essays, each built on a quotation from a writer or thinker such as Emerson, Thoreau, Shakespeare, Chief Seattle, Confucius or Langston Hughes, with a biographical note and suggestions for practice. It is designed to be read one essay a day.
There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem
A book in two halves: the first argues that problems are illusions, drawing on the Bhagavad Gita and the Bible; the second is an extended meditation on the Prayer of St. Francis, “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace”. Publishers Weekly found the second half the stronger.
The Power of Intention
Dyer recasts intention as a force in the universe rather than personal willpower, borrowing the idea from Carlos Castaneda, and describes its “seven faces”: creativity, kindness, love, beauty, expansion, unlimited abundance and receptivity. The book has three parts, the second applying the idea to areas of life in ten-step programmes. It was also made into one of his public-television specials.
Change Your Thoughts—Change Your Life
Dyer spent a year reading and practising the Tao Te Ching, then wrote 81 essays, one for each verse, each ending with a section called “Doing the Tao Now”. The verses are compiled from a dozen existing translations; in 2010 the translator Stephen Mitchell sued over lines used without permission, and the case was dismissed after a settlement in 2011.
Excuses Begone!
A catalogue of the excuses people use to avoid change — it will be too hard, I’m too old, it’s in my genes — and a method for dropping them: seven principles (awareness, alignment, now, contemplation, willingness, passion and compassion) and seven questions to put to any excuse, starting with whether it is true.
Wishes Fulfilled
Published by Hay House in February 2012 and built on the teachings of the metaphysical speaker Neville Goddard and the phrase “I am that I am”. Its “Five Wishes Fulfilled Foundation” covers imagination, living from the end, feeling it, attention and the moments before sleep. Dyer cites his own leukaemia and the Brazilian healer John of God along the way.
I Can See Clearly Now
A memoir told through dozens of turning points, from his childhood in Detroit and his years in the Navy to how he writes his books, each followed by what he thinks it taught him. In it he also says the premise of Your Erroneous Zones came mainly from recordings of his St. John’s lectures.
In What Order to Read Wayne Dyer
None of Dyer’s books depend on each other, so you can read by subject. Publication order does show a clear change, though. The first three books, up to 1980, are practical psychology written by a counsellor. From You’ll See It When You Believe It (1989) onwards he writes about spirit, intention and manifesting, and from the 2000s he builds books around older texts: the Prayer of St. Francis, the Tao Te Ching, Neville Goddard.
If you want to know which Dyer you prefer, read Your Erroneous Zones and The Power of Intention side by side. Wisdom of the Ages and Change Your Thoughts—Change Your Life are made to be read a few pages at a time rather than straight through.

How Wayne Dyer Writes: From the Counselling Room to the Tao
The early books read like a counsellor talking to one client at a time. Your Erroneous Zones works through a fixed list of problems — approval-seeking, guilt, worry, fear of the unknown — and for each one names the habit, explains what the person gains from keeping it, and gives concrete steps to drop it. The underlying idea, that feelings follow from what we tell ourselves, comes from the cognitive therapy of the 1960s; Albert Ellis argued Dyer took more of it than he credited.
From 1989 the subject changes but the method stays. Dyer swaps psychology for spirit, intention and manifesting, and borrows his frameworks from older sources: Lao Tzu, St. Francis, Carlos Castaneda, Neville Goddard. Many of the later books are built in short, numbered units meant for daily reading: 60 essays in Wisdom of the Ages, 81 in Change Your Thoughts—Change Your Life, each ending with a practical exercise.
Reviewers were often hard on him. Kirkus called Your Sacred Self unoriginal and Publishers Weekly found Wisdom of the Ages uneven, but both noted the same strength: he made ideas from Eastern religion and humanistic psychology plain enough for a mass audience. The same habit of borrowing led to his two public disputes, with Ellis in the 1980s and with the translator Stephen Mitchell in 2010.

What is Wayne Dyer’s most famous book?
Your Erroneous Zones (1976). It spent 64 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and reached number one in May 1977; its publisher now claims more than 35 million copies sold.
Did Wayne Dyer plagiarise Your Erroneous Zones?
The psychologist Albert Ellis said so. In a 1985 letter he called the book “the worst example” of plagiarism of his Rational Emotive Therapy and said Dyer had attended one of his workshops; he never sued, and also called it “a good book” that had helped many people. Dyer wrote in his 2014 memoir that the premise came mainly from his own lecture recordings. Separately, the translator Stephen Mitchell sued Dyer and Hay House in 2010 over lines from his Tao Te Ching translation used in two books; the case was dismissed in 2011 after a settlement.

What did Wayne Dyer say about John of God?
He said that “psychic surgery” performed remotely by the Brazilian medium João Teixeira de Faria, known as John of God, together with positive thinking and exercise, helped him with his leukaemia. He described it in a 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey and in Wishes Fulfilled.
Was Wayne Dyer in a film?
He starred in The Shift (2009), a film about moving from ambition to meaning, and voiced a passage from one of his lectures in the Pixar short Day & Night (2010), shown before Toy Story 3.
