Books Written by Gillian Flynn

In December 2008 Entertainment Weekly made its television critic, Gillian Flynn, redundant. She had already published one novel, Sharp Objects (2006), about a reporter sent back to her Missouri home town to cover the murders of two girls; a second, Dark Places, followed in 2009. The third, Gone Girl (2012), about a wife who vanishes on her fifth wedding anniversary, spent eight weeks at number one on the New York Times list and had sold more than 15 million copies by 2016. Flynn wrote the screenplay for David Fincher’s film of it in 2014 and has worked as much for the screen as on the page since. This guide covers her four key books, in order, and where to begin.

In What Order to Read Gillian Flynn

None of Flynn’s books share characters or settings, so there is no series order. Read in publication order and you see the same territory — damaged women, the rural Midwest, families keeping secrets — handled with more control each time, until Gone Girl moves the danger from a whole town into a single marriage.

Most readers start with Gone Girl and go back to Sharp Objects, the darkest of the three novels. The Grownup is short enough to read before deciding whether her style suits you.

How Gillian Flynn Writes: Unreliable Women, Unforgiving Towns

Every Flynn book is narrated, at least in part, by a woman, and none of them is easy to like. Camille Preaker has a history of self-harm; Libby Day helped convict her brother on testimony she later doubts; Amy Dunne’s diary turns out to be a weapon. Flynn has said that feminism includes “the ability to have women who are bad characters”, and her books are built on that idea: the reader is given a voice, comes to depend on it, and then has to reconsider it.

Her settings are small places in Missouri and Kansas, the region where she grew up: Wind Gap, where one family owns the pork-farming business; a farmhouse in Kinnakee, Kansas; North Carthage, the home town Nick Dunne has come back to. She uses alternating narrators and time frames to withhold information — Ben and Patty Day in 1985 against Libby in the present, Nick’s account against Amy’s diary — so that the structure itself does the work of the twist.

Before the novels she was a journalist, and she has said that she could not have written a novel without that training, because it taught her to write without waiting for inspiration. The same economy runs through her scripts: since 2014 she has adapted Gone Girl herself, co-written Widows with Steve McQueen and written every episode of Utopia.

What is Gillian Flynn’s most famous book?

Gone Girl (2012). It spent eight weeks at number one on the New York Times hardcover fiction list, had sold more than 15 million copies by 2016, and was filmed by David Fincher in 2014 with Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.

Are Gillian Flynn’s books connected?

No. Each of the four is a standalone with its own characters and setting, so you can read them in any order.

Which Gillian Flynn books have been adapted?

All three novels. Gone Girl became a film in 2014, from Flynn’s own screenplay; Dark Places a film in 2015 with Charlize Theron; and Sharp Objects an HBO limited series in 2018 with Amy Adams. A film of The Grownup and an HBO series of Dark Places have been announced.

Some critics said so when the film came out in 2014. Flynn, who calls herself a feminist, has said feminism includes “the ability to have women who are bad characters”.
